Causes: Human Service Organizations, Human Services
Mission: Identify and resolve most immediate needs in remote villages of Latin America to help create and maintain safer, healthier and more economically independent and stable living conditions in the most vulnerable indigenous communities.
Results: We equipped the clinic in Ollantaytambo, Peru, which had been lacking soap and clean bed linens, with an ultrasound machine, EKG machine, dental equipment, otoscope, X ray machine, new mattresses and towels, and sanitation equipment. We then focused our attention on helping remote indigenous tribes obtain speedier access to medical attention. We installed 3 satellite telephones where calls could be placed to the clinic and a car collects them. We also designed and helped build a greenhouse where they could grow more food in the arid region where they live. It has since grown and continues to help while maintaining intact the cultural integrity of the people we work with. We are currently working with the Kogi tribe in Santa Marta, Colombia. In the past month we have sent over 110 solar powered lamps and headlamps, per their request, an outdoor water purifier, as their rivers and lakes are being increasingly contaminated by industrial waste. Our next goal is to establish fair trade and compensation for their artisanal weavings, helping them maintain economic independence and cultural practice.
