Mission: In 1993 women working in criminal justice and formerly incarcerated women focused on the challenges women face when being released from jail or prison for nonviolent offenses. In 1997 the Center for Women in Transition was established, modeled after an 8-year program in NY that has reduced recidivism to below 20% (compared to national average of 73%). Currently our recidivism rate for women in our mentoring program is less than 10%. Volunteer mentors are recruited, trained and supported to assist women in examining behavior, establishing goals for change and staying committed to their goals. Referrals are made to community resources for job training and placement, counseling, housing, childrens' resources and education.
Programs: The organization provides re-entry services to women in the criminal justice system in the form of one-on-one mentoring, life skills training, case management, and referrals to medical and social services, such as substance abuse treatment, counseling, job readiness training, and job search techniques. The organization also provides transitional housing and basic needs, including clothing, toiletries, food cards, bus passes, and financial assistance to women in the criminal justice system. During the year, the oganization provided support to 111 women.
