Mission: The Cenaes mission is to improve lives, families and communities through increased literacy. By providing non-literate Spanish speakers literacy and education in their native language, Cenaes endeavors to decrease the significant life barriers encountered by Washington DC’s growing Latino population and increase the economic sustainability and nurture the benefits access of its population.
Results: As of December 2012, Cenaes has taught basic literacy and pre ESL skills to over six hundred students. Demand continues to grow. The number of eager learners increases yearly, with a record 150 people registered for upcoming semesters.
Target demographics: All ages of the non literate Hispanic community that require basic literacy skills in their native language of Spanish.
Geographic areas served: Metropolitan Washington DC, also known as the National Capital Region, Arlington–Alexandria, DC–VA–MD–WV Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Programs: The Cenaes program is designed in three tiers to be consistent with the National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL) standards and the Adult Supplemental Literacy Assessment (ASLA) of document, prose, and quantitative literacy in their native language of Spanish. Classes are provided for free and include necessary teaching materials for all students. In Tier One students learn the alphabet, how to write their name, and how to form basic words. Tier Two teaches students to form sentences, practice reading, writing and spelling. In Tier Three students who can read and write at a basic skills level elevate their comprehension and writing communication in formal Spanish.
