Mission: Cabrini immigrant services of new york city inc. Provides support services to immigrants to the united states of america, more specifically, immigration and citizenship services, case management, advocacy, and dissemination of information regarding access to education, health care, social services and other programs available to assist immigrants: and financially support, promote and conduct activities that assist immigrants to integrate into the culture of the united states of america.
Programs: Immigration legal services:cis-nyc's legal program offers free and low cost immigration consultations and legal services in english and spanish to a diverse population of immigrants throughout the city. Cis-nyc is accredited by the department of justice to represent legal immigration cases and provides comprehensive and low-cost legal consultations, assessments, and assistance with applications for naturalization, adjustment of status, consular processing and deferred action for childhood arrival (daca) cases. Program service accomplishments: 296 free legal immigration conultations, 210 new cases opened. 107 clients obtained their work authorizations and more than 40 families were reunified. We estimated that clients saved more than $273,000 in legal representations fees by receiving services in the agency.
family program: cis-nyc' family program provides a range of social services, including case management and crisis intervention counseling. Throughout the year the program also organizes various events to meet the practical needs of the families we serve, including a winter coat drive and a holiday gift drive. In 2017 we distributed coats to 155 families and distributed gifts to 254 children in need through these events. We also organize recreational family trips throughout the year for clients and their families to engage in fun experiences they could not otherwise afford, and learn about and experience american culture. In 2017 we were able to include nearly 150 community members in these popular activities. Cis-nyc's immigrant family program also includes the "angel fund" scholarship, which provided funding and support for 19 low-income immigrant college students in 2017.
food pantry: the cis-nyc food pantry provides groceries once a week to clients who live in the lower east side/chinatown area of manhattan. We are one of the few in our service area (new york city zip codes 10001, 10002 and 10003), where 1 in 4 residents live below the poverty level. In 2016 our food pantry transitioned to a client choice method of food distribution, which promotes dignity and agency to help each family or individual get closer to reaching the ultimate goal of self-sufficiency. In 2017 we began distributing family size bags of food, allowing us to ensure that the food we provide meets the unique needs of each of the families we serve. In 2017 we served an average of 780 families each month and distributed enough food for our clients to serve their families 84,987 healthy, well-balanced meals. english, literacy, citizenship, and computer classes:cisnyc's esol program consists of seven twohour classes conducted twice a week between the hours of 10:00 a. M. And 8:00 p. M. , one literacy and citizenship classes were offered once a week from 6:00 to 9:00. All classes were free of charge, although students are asked for a voluntary donation to cover the cost of books and copies. The instructors are all volunteers who have been recruited through a number of volunteer programs and through esl certification courses throughout the city. They attend best practice meetings and are held to high standards for their lesson plans, classroom management, and individual attentiveness to students.
