Mission: Learning, healing, and celebrating nature's beauty with tropical butterflies and marine life.
Programs: The organization's indoor butterfly house and marine cove had 86,425 visitors during the fiscal year ended june 30, 2017. Opportunities to experience tropical ecosystems are minimal to nonexistent for most residents in our nation, let alone in the midwest. A reprieve from the cold, encounters with colorful butterflies and fish, and the tranquility of the exhibits establish our facility as a one-of-a-kind destination. With over 800 tropical butterflies in a year round 80-degree oasis, and twelve saltwater aquariums, we strive to leave an impact on every guest through interactive learning and healing experiences with nature. During the 2016-17 fiscal year, 147 individuals shared their commitment to education, tropical butterflies and marine life, and conservation in the rewarding and serene environment only the butterfly house and marine cove can provide. Volunteers contributed 5,783 hours of service during the fiscal year as interpreters in the butterfly house and marine cove, horticulturists, and education assistants, among others. 3,641 kindergarten through fifth graders attended with their school on a free field trip to explore and discover the rainforest and ocean. Field trips receive special educational classes about butterflies and fish to accompany their interactive learning in the butterfly house and marine cove. In addition, individuals heal with nature's beauty and serenity through yoga, tai chi, and meditation sessions. Free admission is provided to various nonprofit partners, including the sanford cancer center, avera cancer institute, children's inn, dakotabilities, and lifescape, to provide the opportunity to heal and relax surrounded by beautiful butterflies and aquariums.
