Causes: Boys & Girls Clubs, Children & Youth
Mission: For the boys & girls clubs here in perth amboy, there is one persistent dream, a world where every child is given the opportunity to succeed in life and experience a brighter future. It serves with one purpose, to inspire and enable young people to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.
Programs: 21st century cclcmore than 600 students in perth amboy public elementary and middle schools participate in programs including education support, career exploration, digital arts training (including web design, graphic design, photo illustration, music and movie technology, exposure to all forms of art, sports, fitness and recreation, leadership and character development, and health and life skills. At carteret club, students from carteret high school participate in programs such as: one-on-one and small group tutoring, sat/hspa preparation, academic enrichment, rutgers saturday and summer program, community service projects, challenge day, mentoring, and family programs, including a resource center and weekly programs. These programs are funded through the 21st century community learning centers of the u. S. Department of education passed through the new jersey department of education. During the 2013 program year, 428 students participated in before and afterschool academic and enrichment activities that promoted academic achievement, career exploration, civic engagement and healthy living.
nrtcthanks to our partners at the jewish renaissance foundation and the nrtc award, boys & girls clubs of perth amboy was able to accomplish the following:33 students participated in project learn which reinforces the academic enrichment and school engagement of young people during the time they spend at the club. This strategy is based on research demonstrating that students do much better in school and on standardized testing when they spend their non-school hours engaged in fun, but academically beneficial, activities. Club staff focused on hspa prep results are listed below: 97% passed the language arts sections of the hspa 80% passed the math section. In addition, we were able to offer an sat prep course to 17 club sophomores and juniors. The goal of the course was to increase overall student performance in the classroom and to improve student achievement on critical college entrance exams and the college admissions process. 17 students successfully completed the course and showed improvement from pre to post testing. In addition 33 participated in the club's college prep course. Students had an opportunity to visit 4 local and regional colleges and universities, participated in financial aid and college admissions workshops. Students self-reported that they feel better prepared for the college admissions process.
cook avenue unitdue to the generosity of key donors and grants, we were able to provide a safe, positive place for over 102 carteret middle school students. The cooke avenue unit provided safety, a place to learn, a place to grow, a place where memories will be made, and a place where great futures start! Our afterschool program offered age appropriate programming in the following core components:1. Education & career development2. Character & leadership development 3. Health & life skills4. The arts & recreation. 94 percent of our students passed to the next grade level.
