BikePgh has made Pittsburgh a safer place to ride a bike. Whether you ride to commute, exercise or just out of pure enjoyment, it is easier amd safer to do. Because of BikePgh, there are more bike lanes, more bike racks and more bicycle awareness.
This team has achieved an incredible amount of success with remarkably few resources. The small but passionate and dedicated staff does a wonderful job engaging the community to leverage volunteers and partners to improve Pittsburgh's health, sustainability and economic vibrancy through improved cycling infrastructure and policy. One example is BikeFest, which includes dozens of events across the city attended by thousands of people over a 10-day period - all led by one person working with a volunteer events committee and dozens of passionate volunteers. In addition, because of their efforts, there are now miles of additional bike lanes, bike racks on buses, a better integrated network of bike paths as well as a great bike map and guide to commuting by bicycle. I personally know folks who have now been able to start commuting downtown by bike - and have lost 50 lbs. or more - clearly life changing for some.
Beyond being advocates for Pittsburgh cyclist this organization is hands on when reaching out the inner city community. Though outreach efforts and assisting other groups involved with getting kids on bikes, Bike Pgh does not just speak for cyclist they act!
This grassroots organization has done SO MUCH to help make riding a bike safer in Pittsburgh. Bike Pittsburgh is truly a community-driven organization. In addition to putting in bicycle lanes and bike racks, they help organize and promote bicycle-related events, make the raddest bike map in the US, make an awesome commuting guide "comic," help guide people to other resources related to alternative transportation, and lots more.
Riding a bike in Pittsburgh is a lot safer and more enjoyable than it was just five years ago, and these folks have a lot to do with that.
