Causes: Big Brothers & Big Sisters, Children & Youth
Mission: The mission of big brothers big sisters of ulster county is to help children in need of a mentor, become confident, competent and caring individuals through professionally supported one to one relationships.
Programs: Community based mentoring:the agency served one hundred fifty (150) children in 2011 through the community based model. Every child is matched in a one to one relationship with an adult volunteer. They spend a minimum of eight (8) hours a month engaging in activities they both enjoy. Mentors are asked to commit to at least one year in this relationship. The match relationship is monitored and supported regularly by a professional staff person.
statewide mentoring initiative:big brothers big sisters of ulster county was the lead agency for two federally funded programs. Thirteen (13) big brothers big sisters agencies across new york state were sub-grantees under the hhs mentoring children of prisoners grant from u s dept of health and human services, and the public private ventures grant through the u. S. Dept of justice. Hundreds of children impacted by incarceration were served through these state-wide efforts.
