This nonprofit is extraordinary! Consistently taking in animals that would otherwise be euthanized, have no chance or taking in farm animals others would just discard....it doesn't get much better than that when it comes to care and compassion. These guys are the BEST (and for the record, I have a senior sled dog nonprofit so I know the care, the work and the money it takes to makes these organizations run - I know from experience, their quality of care is head's and tails above the rest!)
My son and I are Barn Sanctuary volunteers. The level of care the staff provides for their residents is extraordinary. It's such a joy to see every species who resides here being given every opportunity to flourish. They'll personally drive a resident an hour away to get medical care, and if the results are insufficient, they'll drive them 8, 12, 16 hours (or more) in pursuit of the best possible outcome. The same compassion, kindness and appreciation is shown to those of us who are volunteers. I've felt profoundly more appreciated in 7 months as a weekend volunteer here than I have over the course of my 35 years among the for-profit work force. The experience of being Barn Sanctuary volunteers has dramatically enriched my son's life and mine. We look forward to supporting their mission for many years to come.
I was watching this program on tv. I do with they would put it back on. The people that ran the bar barn amazing and give so much of themselves and their hearts ❤️. If anyone can do anything to help it would be very appreciated. It will go to a great cause. The animals depend on the and they thank you
Our family LOVES Saved by the Barn and all that Barn Sanctuary does! We have watched the TV series from beginning to end 4-5 times and were so happy to find their Facebook page so we can follow them after the series ended. We live in Idaho and it’s our dream to take a family trip to tour the barn.

After seeing “Saved by the Barn” on Animal Planet a few years ago, I just had to visit this amazing place for myself! Just before the pandemic hit, I did fulfill my dream of going there and meeting not only the amazing staff and volunteers, but the very lucky animals who get to call this place “home”. The passion each and every person has that works there has such a love for the welfare of their animals, it was just amazing to experience. Everyone who loves animals should make it a point to visit Barn Sanctuary at least once. ❤️
I have been a fan of this charity since I learned about it through the TV show. Rescue is not easy work, yet they take on animals with life threatening medical problems and do everything humanly possible to save them and give them a quality life with lots of love. A lot of people overlook farm animals but they need rescuers too. Amazing group of people!!

We visited Barn Sanctuary for the first time last Saturday, 10/21, and it was even better than I expected. Although it was a rainy day, the place was beautiful. You could tell by how the animals reacted that they knew they were loved and are given the best care. I can’t wait until tours start next year so I can visit again
Barn Sanctuary is a wonderful place to experience. I did a tour there, which inspired me to voluteer! I live 1.5 hours away but I still drive there a couple times a month to do some cleaning and visit the animals, because it’s just that wonderful. They help animals that other people wouldn’t, giving some prosthetics and water therapy that is costly, and this money could do so many things for the animals there!
This organization means so much to me. After taking a tour of the property a few years ago, I knew I had to become a volunteer. It did not take long to observe all the love and support given to all the animal rescues.
Volunteering at Barn Sanctuary allows for a unique way to interact with the residents which taking a tour alone cannot provide. Some animals like to “help” with your cleaning efforts by knocking over a shovel or giving you a motivational nudge.
I did not realize how volunteering here extended beyond animal interaction and being active in the outdoors. It can also be a social activity, where there are dedicated work days in which everyone is assigned a common task like cleaning the cow yard or painting a barn. These opportunities allow you to spend time with like-minded people.
I was also so lucky to be able to serve as a tour assist for the past few summers. This enabled me to step a bit outside my social comfort zone by interacting with visitors and teaching them about the residents.
The content of the tours has also exposed me to some of the farmed animal industry context in which so many of the rescues began their lives. It has broadened my horizons and assisted me in my journey in becoming fully plant-based. The organization does a fantastic job at presenting the facts and allowing visitors to individually assess society’s treatment of animals without judgment of lifestyles.
Lastly, I have to acknowledge how lovely the staff are. Dan and Tom McKernan are genuine and kind individuals which began the entire operation, and all those which have joined the team since its founding are also wonderful. Every staff member works tirelessly to entire the proper care of animals and upkeep of facilities, both of which are very demanding tasks in a region of the country where the temperature can reach opposite extremes.
I am so grateful that this organization exists and that it has opened its doors to myself and fellow volunteers in its shared mission of providing compassion to animals which have so much personality and deserve the right to live out the rest of their lives on their own terms.
I have volunteered with Barn Sanctuary for over two years. The love, kindness and exceptional care of their animals is over the top! They treat every animal, employee and volunteer like pure gold. I wish every animal could go through life with so much love.
I have had nothing but good experiences with Barn Sanctuary. Being there as a volunteer, I have learned so much about the residents, the current food systems in the US and how I can do something to help make things better. I am so very grateful to be a volunteer at such a phenomenal place and it is the highlight of my week to go out and help take care of the fabulous residents. The Barn Sanctuary is an amazing place. The animal care and facility teams are wonderful and make the experience as a volunteer absolutely incredible. The co founders are on site to make sure everything runs smoothly.The animal care team works with animals who need special loving care and enrichment activities. It is an amazing place to visit!
I came across The Barn Sanctuary in Chelsea MI when watching their show on the Animal Planet. I was so taken by their mission I wanted to know more!! I instantly Googled them and read their entire story!! I was touched & so moved that I then instantly filled out a application to be a volunteer. (Turns out it is only 1 hour from my home.)
Although I had zero experience I knew I had the desire and time to help in any way I could. And just to be honest I was in a place in my life where I needed a little rescue also. I knew this would help me connect with myself, nature and those precious animals!! A triple win!!
I now have been a volunteer since December 2021 and I absolutely love everything about it!! I really look forward to it & it has become one of my favorite places to be!!
The farm is absolutely gorgeous, the barns are very well kept, clean and spacious for all the residents and of course the people are all very welcoming, friendly and helpful!!
The residents are truly well taken care of, well loved and living their best lives! Us humans have alot to learn from them thats for sure!! And It's amazing just how therapeutic shoveling a little poo can be!!!

I was introduced to Barn Sanctuary about four and a half years ago. I have volunteered with the animals, attended events in support of Barn, and fallen in love with all of the animals, especially a blind goat named Charlie. I have been sponsoring Charlie for two and a half years and am happy to do so. I have been so impressed with ALL the care and love that is given to the residents that call Barn Sanctuary home.

Oh. This place. Where you can hug a cow. Squeeze a lamb or a goat. Get up close to pigs and see how beautiful their eyes are. This is my place to go to soothe my soul. I donate quarterly and wish I could do more. The staff is amazing. It is a place where kids can learn empathy for an animal and become kinder gentler humans.

Anyone who takes a cow all the way to California in a van for surgery to save his eye, is one devoted human being. If all human beings could be as devoted as Barn Sanctuary, this world would be so much better. I have learned so much by Dan and Barn Sanctuary to the point that for 3 years I have not eaten any meat, that's any meat!
I am a donor for several sanctuaries including farm animal sanctuaries and I don't think I have ever been so impressed by Barn Sanctuary. Dan and his crew go above and beyond to help animals. When he took Mike across the country in a van to see if Mike could have surgery to prevent blindness, all I can say is amazing. To take Mike on the beach before Mike went blind is probably the most incredible thing I have ever seen. Dan and his sanctuary deserve this award.
I’ve been volunteering at Barn Sanctuary for several months now and I love it. The staff and other volunteers are some of the nicest, coolest, most compassionate people you will ever meet. The animals are all loved and cared for. It’s one of my favorite places to be and I am grateful that I get to dedicate my time and volunteer here. It feels really good to give back and do something extra for the animals, especially because they help me out and cheer me up every time I’m out there. I am looking forward to Barn Sanctuary growing and expanding and rescuing more animals and I hope to be able to volunteer here for a long time.
Because of Dan and Barn Sanctuary, I no longer will eat meat. It use to be grab a package of meat at the meat counter and not think one thing about it other than what I am going to make that day for dinner. I can not ever think that way again. I am a better person because of what Dan has taught me indirectly. He has inspired me to become the person he is.

I love following this barn on Facebook and Instagram. My family and I recently got the pleasure of visiting for my moms birthday. We got a wonderful tour from Emily (sad we didnt get to meet Dan, but he was busy hard at work saving lives) We met all the animals and they are in wonderful caring hands. I cant wait to go back!

My husband and I started out as founding donors as we liked the mission of helping farm animals in need. Then we progressed to attending a variety of their fundraisers. It was clear to us that Dan and the Barn have such a passion for the animals, and we decided we wanted to share the love, so we became volunteers! Barn Sanctuary is truly an inspiration. I follow their story on Instagram with my two children and am inspired on a daily basis by their loving care of rescued animals. My 9 year old daughter now donates monthly and has learned the joy of giving to a great cause.

The Barn Sanctuary is one of my favorite charities that I support. Dan and the staff care for these animals in a way they have never seen. Our kids are all at college and have electronic picture frames at our houses. I send their frames pictures of all of the animals and refer to them as their new siblings. Mike is a favorite!

Though I have never been to Barn Sanctuary (I live overseas) , I follow them closely on instagram and I have seen nothing but compassion. Their constant affection and care for animals, both sick and well is wonderful to see, especially in today’s world. They have inspired me greatly to start taking steps towards being a vegan, as well as having the dream of owning my very own sanctuary. Though while this will not happen for a decades to come, there is always Barn Sanctuary to remind me of what to look forward to.
This is probably my favourite animal sanctuary! I originally came across it after I saw Mike’s story. He’s a rescued calf that ended up losing his sight. Recently they’ve adopted a new calf (Andy) who has severe burns all over his body. The world needs more people like this. And I mean, desperately. I wish I could volunteer but unfortunately I’m thousands of miles away in the UK. When I watch their stories it gives me hope that not all is lost for humanity yet.

Was so excited to see Barn Sanctuary opened their doors to the public after following them on instagram. My friend and I went to their grand opening and I was floored with how amazing their tours were. Not only did you get to meet the animals up close and personal, but they educate you about the meat and commercial farming industry in a way that isn’t threatening or in your face and in hopes to make a difference. They are changing so many lives. Animals and humans alike. They had vegan vendors and artists. They also had amazing facilities and all volunteer based. I can’t tell enough people about Barn sanctuary. The hearts they have and the love they give is an inspiration and makes me want to do so much more. They deserve all the recognition in the world

I have been following this sanctuary since it first started and Dan cares so much. It shows in his posts and story’s but most of all his actions. To take his cow friend Mike cross country on a road trip to fix his eyes. Amazing, and even though it didn’t work he was still smiling over time well spent with his buddy. This is a young sanctuary but it has a lot of promise and I can see Dan and his team helping countless animals in the years to come.

I truly wish I had more money and time to dedicate to such an amazing organization. Dan and his family have gone above and beyond to help farm animals in the Midwest: driving cross country for medical appointments, taking in animals deemed helpless by others, and so much more. This is the kind of organization that makes me want to give back and has even pushed me from occasional meat eater to full vegetarian. Their social media presence tells a beautiful story about how much humans can learn from animals.
I have been volunteering for Barn Sanctuary for almost a year and I have to say this is THE BEST PLACE EVER!!! Everyone is AMAZING!! And the animals are so well cared for, and the staff treats us volunteers like family.
I love everything the barn sanctuary is about. I first heard about them at a veg fest in Grand Rapids & I have followed them ever since. I think it’s so special that they spend their lives helping animals in need & they educate people in the process.
Volunteering at Barn Sanctuary is amazing. I have been a volunteer here for about 4 months and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Everyone who works or volunteers there is incredible. Compassionate, friendly, caring. Some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. I feel like I really fit in here. The animals are well taken care of and you can feel the love for each and every animal at Barn Sanctuary. Nothing puts me in a better mood than coming out to volunteer - it’s truly therapeutic. Barn Sanctuary is the best thing that has happened to me. I have been searching for a sanctuary to volunteer at for 7 years, and this crew welcomed me with open arms.
There is so much that goes into a farm, medical, cleaning, community, and strategy on how to keep it funded. Dan, Kelly, Christine and Tom work non-stop to create the support and funds that are needed for these beautiful animals.
On top of that I get to photograph for this amazing community, and its the best job in the world.

I visited the Barn Sactuary during their first weekend open celebration. It is truly an amazing place. The staff are all so passionate about what they do. The animals are cared for so well and you can see the happiness they now have in their eyes. Barn Sanctuary is an amazing animal sanctuary. They go above and beyond to rescue animals by getting them the best medical care and ultimately giving them a wonderful home at their sanctuary. Their social media presence allows us to follow the journey of these beautiful animals as they heal and become part of the Barn Sanctuary family. The love and commitment that the owners and volunteers give to the animals is admirable and proves that loving animals and living a vegan lifestyle is a wonderful way to live life. I can’t wait to see the sanctuary continue to grow and hope one day to visit the sanctuary in person.
I am so happy to have found Barn Sanctuary. They do such amazing work with Animals. Their compassion is palpable. I always feel up to date with what’s going on with their rescues, like I’m part of the family. They are amazing people, with a beautiful vision and I’m happy to be a part of it.
I have been volunteering at Barn Sanctuary since September 2017, shortly after they recieved non-profit status. During this time, I have had the privledge in seeing the love, compassion and dedication that goes into the animals and their care.
Dan, Tom, Kelly and Christine are such incredible individuals who give the animals the sanctuary and safety that they are deserving of. Through the extreme animal care cases that require daily warm baths on burn victims such as Andy, who escaped a barn fire in Ohio, to physical therapy for animals like Jim and Jill, who in their previous home, suffered from frost bite and are now missing parts of their limbs. The love and consideration that has gone into Mike, the blind cow, who they believe needed a seeing eye buddy for the best quality of life possible, now has two best friends (Dan Jr. And Dwight) who help with his vision needs on the pasture and everything else your BFF is good for.
So many would have looked at the extreme cases of neglect and turned the animals in need away. The team at Barn Sanctuary has devoted their lives to making sure that every animal deserves the opportunity to love, be loved and have the best quality of life possible, even exceeding that in so many unique ways per individual non-human.
Every animal who finds refuge at Barn Sanctuary is incredibly lucky to be be wrapped in the loving arms of this team for the rest of their lives.

The folks at Barn Sanctuary are some of the most compassionate human beings on the planet who genuinely want to do good for the animals they protect. They do an amazing job communicating with volunteers and donors about how their funds are being used and how they are helping the nonprofit fulfill it's mission. Dan, Kelly, Tom, Christine, and all the volunteers make you believe in humanity. The animals they rescue are cared for, protected, and seriously LOVED. There is no place more magical on this earth than the Barn Sanctuary in Chelsea, Michigan.
Since beginning my volunteer journey at Barn Sanctuary in October 2017, my life has changed radically. There is nothing more rewarding than being able to provide care for such incredible beings, alongside some downright awesome humans. Being able to personally connect with the residents of Barn has further opened my eyes and my heart to the plight of farmed animals simply by allowing me to discover the unique and individual personalities of each animal. I cherish my relationship with each individual, human and non, at the sanctuary and am so grateful for the opportunity to help do such important work alongside individuals who share my values and exude an unmatched level of compassion. I volunteer every week, twice a week when I can, and would not trade this opportunity for anything. Caring for the animals has given me a sense of purpose along with a renewed sense of peace and hope. Simply stepping foot on the property fills me with unbridled joy, and I cannot encourage people enough to fill out a volunteer application here or at their nearest farm animal sanctuary. Your life will only be better for it.
I’ve been volunteering at Barn Sanctuary for several months, and I love everyone involved there. It’s such a warm, welcoming place with a family of people who have a passion for the animals we get the honor of helping care for. I look forward to my time there, and it has become one of my happiest places to be.
I started following the Barn Sanctuary on social media about a year ago. It was so easy to fall in love with all of the animals - with their unique stories and quirky personalities. Little did I know, it would soon become MY sanctuary as well.
Mike, Henry, June and even Beulah. These animals all have human names to match their human-like personalities. They are allowed to be free - to roam - to explore - to be happy - and to love - both each other and all of the human friends they interact with on a daily basis.
Initially, I planned on volunteering once a month. But after my first shift, I quickly realized that wasn't going to be enough. I now go every other week - and every week whenever I can. This is my happy place - a place that fills my bucket. I have two small children and work part time. My weeks are long, exhausting and stressful. Escaping from my subdivision - and pulling up to a beautiful 70+ acre property with two beautiful barns - makes all of that stress melt away. I happily shovel cow pies in exchange for cow love!
The Barn Sanctuary truly is a special place that is doing AMAZING things (with SO many other amazing things in the works!!!). These animals are thriving and living life the way they're supposed to. Dan and the rest of the gang are saints for their dedication and commitment. I'm so excited to see what the future holds.
I absolutely love Barn Sanctuary! I am amazed at the level of caring they have for the farm animals. I have such great affection for Little Dude, Mike, Andy, Dwight, Twitch and Charles. Barn sanctuary has taught me so much about animals being sentient beings. I was a vegetarian who became a vegan because of these folks. And, the animals are so blessed to be living there. In this crazy world I view their videos to remind me that good people and good organizations still exist!
I was lucky to meet Dan and other folks from Barn Sanctuary at a vegan event at a local brewery. Dan gave me his card and the very next day I signed up to be a volunteer. I fell in love with Barn Sanctuary the second I arrived for orientation. Each animal has their own story and unique personality and you can feel an instant connection. The entire team at Barn and all of the volunteers are some of the most compassionate people I have had the privilege of knowing and working with. Each of the amazing animals at the Sanctuary are treated like a family member- their lives are truly valued and you can tell that they know they are in a safe place. To see the care and love that everyone has for these sweet babies fills my heart. I am proud to be a volunteer at Barn Sanctuary and I can't wait for every day I spend there. I consider myself very lucky!
I can't say enough about Dan and everyone at Barn Sanctuary. Though I live many states away, I feel a bond with all of the animals at Barn Sanctuary through the videos, pictures, and stories that Dan shares. It's incredible to watch these amazing animals grow into happy and playful individuals with big personalities of their own. I can't say enough about Dan either. I've never watched someone give so much just to give these animals a fighting chance at their own best lives possible, whether driving Mike the cow cross-country for a chance at normal sight, helping Little Dude the pig grow up to have a normal pig life, and fighting for little Lambert to survive and have a chance at quality of life. Though not every story has a happy ending, Dan and Barn Sanctuary give 100%+ to every little life they come in contact with. I couldn't be happier to give to Barn Sanctuary. They are beyond deserving. Keep up the great work Dan and EVERYONE at Barn Sanctuary.
