Mission: Changing lives and transforming communities, in rwanda, through education, clean water and community development. A reconciled rwanda with educated and caring leaders building hope, health and sustainability for all its people. Arm focuses its mission in several communities in the boneza sector (population 22,000) of extremely rural western rwanda. Located along the shores of lake kivu in the fertile, hill region, villagers are primarily agrarian tending their personal gardens for their family food and, for trade, larger plots of tea, coffee, bananas, and potatoes. This beautiful region is rich in human resources but underdeveloped in the areas of water and essential infrastructure. It is to this region that we are bringing our mission, ministry and resources, working with the community leaders for steady sustainable progress.
Programs: 30 cows arrived in april 2014 as a result of the december 2013 challenge presented by the members of the virginia dale church in virginia dale, colorado. 26 cows have were donated to boneza community and given to the needy families using the following criteria: the family is very poor but can care for the cow; they can build a cow shelter; and finally they must receive veterinary training in cow rearing. In addition, four more cows have been donated by the local community as part of the arise rwanda initiative to support their poor neighbors. Again in december another 20 cows were donated to the boneza community using the same criteria for selecting a needy family. This recognition of community commitment makes the arise rwanda efforts even more significant. The cows bring dignity and respect to families and continue the reconciliation following the 1994 genocide.
the fourth preschool funded by arise rwanda opened in january 2014 on bugarura island, rwanda. This is the first ever pre-school on this island community of 2,000 people. Ninety children are enrolled in two sessions. The students received uniforms and participate in the preschool curriculum learning their numbers, letters and pre-reading skills. The children in all four preschools supported by arise rwanda are learning english, an official language of rwanda. After only three months in school the preschoolers can count from 1-10 in english and can sing the alphabet! Equally important is the bowl of porridge nutritional supplement they receive as part of the daily routine. Healthy minds and healthy bodies combine to bring hope for the future of boneza and rwanda. The fourth pre-school classroom is housed in a local leaders office who voluntarily gave it to the community to be used as a classroom for the pre-school. Since the building is too small to accommodate all the children, it will be expanded by adding an extra classroom and a kitchen for the feeding program. The parents and the community aremaking bricks and hauling rocks. Construction is underway! Arise rwanda will help with the roofing, cement, and the pay for the builder.
kevin denton, an arise rwanda ministries board member and educator from colorado spent a month in boneza, rwanda evaluating the educational resources from our four preschools, to the government schools, to the missing pieces of secondary and vocational education. His findings are forming the focus of planning for kivu hills academy. Currently almost 30 acres of land on the hill and along the lake have been identified as the ideal location for the construction of the secondary school. The curriculum will follow the direction of the rwandan government to focus on vocational training that will provide advanced sustainable jobs for use in the growing community. Genesis architectural studio, located in kigali, rwanda has begun the design phase of the school.
