My husband and I adopted a ten year old Chihuahua ,called Copper, from the Howes Cave Shelter, a few years ago. If it wasn't for the women who worked there, we never would have had the privilege of loving "our little old man" as he probably would have been put down for being old . He only had two good teeth and a huge heart in that tiny body but he put both to good use. Copper brought us laughter and love and left us way too soon. The Women who take good care, of the dogs and cats ,that others have given up for reasons both good and bad, do so with very little help or support from the Community. At least it seemed that way, because at that time ,there was very little, if any, heat in the place . This was due to an ancient heating system and very little money for fuel. The staff wisely put Copper in a cage with a sweet larger dog friend of his with whom he could cuddle for warmth. Copper was my Christmas present that year. The best ever! This year I want to adopt another small dog . At the same time I can only wish that their are no little guys up there. I would love to be able to think that all the little dogs are in good homes with loving families this Yuletide.

the needs of the shelter of schoharie valley have snow- balled since the down turn of the economy. Our building was bought for $1.00 from the co. 10 yrs ago. This seems to tell it all.. we are in need of a new roof now , patch work was done but is temporary. Renovation of the kennels (including a new boilder to heat the floors) & the cattery. The community rallys fo our side when the cry goes out for cleaning supplies , cat littter, & pet food, but alas because of the times we live in this is harder & harder for the community to do.

The animal shelter of schoharie valley, ny though small has a large heart.. We found our lovable pup (100 lbs) there 3years ago & treasuer every minute. Kaz was 1st at a kill shelter & transfered to Schoharie shelter (which is a no kill shelter) because he was to be put down...You see other shelters in the state send animals to schoharie just because of the fact we are a no kill.. thank Heaven for the dedicated peple at the shelter!!
