Mission: To find a cure for cancer by funding research in and increasing public awareness of comparative oncology, the study of naturally occurring cancers in human beings and in companion animals.
Results: ACF Grant Programs and Initiatives have provided grant funding for The Canine Cancer Genome Project (CCGP) sponsored by Blue Buffalo Foundation and Animal Cancer Foundation and awarded to the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) to map canine cancer genomes and place datasets in the public domain, as well as for CAR-T therapy for use in dogs with B-cell lymphoma to The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and for development of Elephant P53 as a naturally occurring cancer resistor in elephants. ACF measures impact in the ability of this early investigational funding to allow the research teams to generate data that brings large government and institutional investment.
Target demographics: people, pets
Direct beneficiaries per year: Map the genomics of common canine cancer tumors
Geographic areas served: United States
Programs: To fund and develop research focused on the biologic similarity of cancer in pets and people that will expedite therapeutic and preventative benefits for both. Also, to educate the public and scientific community about the biologic similarity of cancer in pets and people, and to communicate the ways in which comparative oncology is accelerating the treatment, prevention and ultimate eradication of cancer.
