Causes: Environment, Natural Resources Conservation & Protection
Mission: The Angeles National Forest Fire Lookout Association (ANFFLA) is a non-profit volunteer organization in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service. The four primary purposes of the Association are: 1. Fire Lookout Operations. 1a. Provide wildland fire protection and aid active fire suppression by detecting fire starts in the mountains above several highly populated municipalities. 1b. Restore and maintain fire lookout towers of operational and historical interest in the Angeles National Forest and the San Gabriel Mountains. 1c. Provide trained volunteer staff to operate the fire lookout towers. 1d. Provide pre-suppression fire education to the general public that visit the fire lookout towers and provide outreach events for those that cannot visit the towers. 2. Interpret the natural and cultural history in the areas surrounding the lookout towers. 2a. Educate visitors regarding plants and animals of the forest. 2b. Educate visitors regarding the history and cultural significances of the area. 3. Encourage visitors to participate actively in caring for all of our National Forests. 3a. Provide Web-based education on the history of the towers and forest areas. 3b. Provide "Smokey The Bear" campaign educational materials to visitors. 4. Generate interest in and support for the Fire Lookout Program & the National Forests. 4a. Recruit volunteers from communities to help meet this mission.
