The American Classical League (ACL) stands as a cornerstone of classical education, providing resources, advocacy, and professional development for educators who teach Latin and Greek. ACL’s work in sustaining and expanding classical studies is vital, helping to keep these languages and cultures alive in modern education. I owe this organization so much since it helped shaped me into the person I am today.
Who would have thought that a decision I made 36 years ago would be one of the next decisions of my life. While in high school, my amazing Latin teacher encouraged me to join the National Junior Classical League. This is an outstanding organization that brings together middle and high school students passionate about classical languages and civilizations. It provides engaging competitions, conventions, and activities that inspire intellectual curiosity and camaraderie. I was so lucky to have had the opportunity to participate in many of these opportunities as a high school student in Connecticut. Once I graduated, I joined the Senior Classical League. The NSCL continues the mission of the NJCL for college students and beyond, ensuring that those who have grown up with the NJCL can remain connected to the classical world. SCL serves as a bridge for academic growth, leadership opportunities, and networking with others who share a passion for classics. Their dedication to mentoring younger students is invaluable. As an SCL member living in Connecticut and Arizona, I had the opportunity to share my love of the classics with so many from across the US. Upon graduation, I joined the ACL. Thanks to the ACL placement, I was employed!
Together, these organizations form a dynamic network that nurtures intellectual enthusiasm, leadership skills, and lifelong friendships rooted in classical studies. Their impact on students and educators is truly remarkable, making the classics both accessible and inspiring for future generations. If you’re passionate educator of ancient civilizations, the ACL is excellent way to dive deeper into history while connecting with like-minded individuals!

The American Classical League is the preeminent national organization which fosters community, collaboration, and advocacy for teaching and learning about Ancient Greek and Latin languages and cultures, and their relationship to the broader Mediterranean and beyond. As a Junior Classical League member, I felt connected to other JCLers around the country, and now as a Latin teacher, I feel the same connection to teachers as well as support, resources, and countless opportunities both for me and my students. The best thing new Latin or Ancient Greek teachers can do for themselves is join the ACL and attend the summer Institute. The best thing teachers can do for their students is join the JCL and provide opportunities to them year round for enrichment and connection. Enthusiasm, passion, creativity, and collaboration abound in the ACL at all ages.
