Volunteering Oportunities

Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Agricultural Programs, Food

Mission: Our mission is to ensure the health and biodiversity of wild macroalgae ecosystems in the nearshore coastal zones of the American Pacific. We develop and maintain gametophyte seed banks of kelps for west coast species with strong potential for restoration and farming. These seed banks encompass most functionally relevant genetic variants (typically 500 stocks or more per species) in the following species: Giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera), Bull kelp (Nereocystis luetkeana), Golden Kombu (Laminaria farlowii), Ribbon kelp (Alaria marginata). We will also develop collections of kelp Microbial Symbionts.

After touring the facility of Kelp Ark I found myself enthralled with their ethics and the way they connect everything with the community. Michael said he loved bringing in kids to expose them to the wonders of biology and having them being exposed will cause the cycle of new information and ideas to circulate for generations. When talking about the collection of kelp I thought it was amazing how the oldest storage is up to the 80s and stored under red light. How they can keep the same kelp and keep regrowing the algae. Hayden had told us that the kelp found during the wildfires is being preserved and they are currently trying to clean it. What was most interesting was the talk about how biostimulants can come from kelp and can be used towards crops as a growth hormone. I also thought it was fun that they took us down to the dock to see in real life the abundance of algae growing right here.
