Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Children & Youth, Crime & Law, Youth Development, Youth Violence Prevention

Mission: To promote health and welfare of children

Programs: Several programs are funded through the juvenile crime prevention council (jcpc) which includes teen court, juvenile restitution/community service and community outreach. Teen court provides an opportunity for juveniles who have committed a first time offense to be held personally accountable for their behavior and the opportunity to have their criminal charges dismissed. This is a motivating factor for the juveniles not to re-offend. All program activities and the constructive sentences entered by the jurors are designed to provide positive youth and adult role models. Parents are required to participate throughout the program. Teen volunteers, acting as jurors and attorneys, are responsible for sentencing youth offenders. If the juvenile successfully completes the teen court sentence, a district court judge will dismiss their charge, giving them a second chance with a clean record. The goal of the juvenile restitution/community service program is to provide an opportunity for juveniles to be held personally accountable for their delinquent behavior by having them work to provide reparations to the community or monetary restitution to their victims. The program assists in reducing recidivism through learning more appropriate behaviors by exposure to positive role models at the worksites and learning responsibility through the community service experience. Community outreach aims to reduce delinquent, criminal, court and gang involvement of youth in gaston county through intense services and collaboration with the gaston county gang initiative. These youth participate in prevention and intervention activities based on the comprehensive gang model. Law enforcement, the gaston county faith communities and countywide service agencies create additional support for identified youth who are at high risk of delinquent, criminal and/or gang involvement.

the mission of communities in schools (cis) is to surround students with a community of support empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. For well over a decade in gaston county, and for nearly 40 years across the nation, cis has provided successful drop-out prevention programming at public school sites. By showing communities how to coordinate their public, private, and non-profit resources, kids can get the help they need, where they need it. Some examples of the activities held at cis sites are: school supply drives, after school homework clubs, career fairs, community service, mentoring, lunch and reading buddies. Each cis program surrounds young people with a community of health and mental health care providers, career counselors, tutors, mentors, lunch buddies, classroom and homework club volunteers, and other caring adults who can help them prepare for life.
