Mission: Our mission is to provide the skills and services necessary for learners to achieve meaningful participation in a literate society and to encourage the self-confidence and imagination to use those tools for the benefit of self, family, and the communities served by Mason County Literacy. Results: In our 2009-2010 program year, we served 281 students studying reading, writing, math, basic skills, and English for Speakers of Other Languages. 9 Students earned a GED, 36 got a job, 91 kept a job, 2 obtained citizenship, 8 transferred to higher education, and 5 left public assistance. Our 185 volunteers contributed 8,178 volunteer hours. Thank you to all our volunteers for making our work possible!
Geographic areas served: Mason County & Thurston County
Programs: Adult Basic Education (ABE): One-on-one and small group tutoring in reading, writing, math, or GED prep. Volunteers and staff design and teach lessons tailored to individual student's goals and learning styles. English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL): One-on-one and small group instruction in English language skills. Volunteers and staff plan and teach lessons incorporating reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Civics lessons provide immigrant students with the information necessary for them to be active participants in their new community. Children's Program: Literacy-based childcare is provided for students requiring childcare in order to attend classes. Our morning program caters to infants and toddlers, while our evening program cares for school-age children.
