Nonprofit Overview
Causes: Civil Rights, Voter Education & Registration, Voting Rights
Mission: To catalyze the energy, enthusiasm, and intellect of young people in wa state to create sustainable, positive change through our education of young people, as well as voter registration, voter turnout and leadership development programs.
Programs: Campus: the bus's campus program supports student leaders with civic engagement and voter registration efforts in washington. The bus's approach to campus organizing is grounded in a deep partnership with students on campus. The bus provides training, resources, data management and event and field support to our campus partners to build campus infrastructure around civic engagement and voter registration.
fellows: the bus fellowship program is a ten-week full-time leadership development, social justice, and community organizing intensive for 18-25 year-olds from across washington. The fellowship trains each fellow in key leadership and organizing skills to be an effective civic leader after graduating from the fellowship. Fellows alumni go on to use their leadership skills to organize and lead in a wide variety of fields.
gotv: the get-out-the-vote program focused on making calls to engage young voters in turning in their ballots. Bus staff and interns recruited volunteers to call young voters before the general election and provide information about ballot drop boxes and deadlines. The phonebanks engaged a large number of voters, and provided a leadership development opportunity for our interns.
internship: the washington bus education fund internship program focused specifically on empowerment and leadership development for young people. Bus interns worked hands-on in the organizing arena. The intership drew from high schools all across the seattle area, and provided a supportive learning environment through peer and mentor relationships, and focusing on tools to become activists for social change.
