Volunteering for Refugee Transitions has been an eye-opening experience for me. It has taken me into the homes of people I would never have become close to, allowing us to learn from each other about our very different experiences and cultural backgrounds. Refugee Transitions makes the introduction between volunteer and new refugee, and provides training on English teaching. Follow up training opportunities cover topics like connecting parents with their children's schools. This is important volunteer work, as the RT volunteer is often the first person to visit and befriend the new refugee family and welcome them to their new home. You will really make a difference in your tutee's life when you volunteer for RT.

Mission: Refugee & Immigrant Transitions' mission is to assist newcomer families in becoming self-sufficient in the United States by providing services to help them attain the English language, life, job, and academic skills they need to succeed in their new communities.
Results: RIT's goal is to unlock opportunity for newcomers. We honor the journeys of our students and support them on their pathways to education, employment, citizenship, and community engagement. In FY2017-2018, we served 2,500 newcomers in the Bay Area. 86% of high school seniors who participate in our academic tutoring programs, graduate high school (outperforming California English learners by 18%). 96% of our youth leadership program participants enter college after graduating high school, most of them the first in their family to do so. Our adult students make English gains that outperform California state averages in all 4 English levels that we prioritize for our instruction. Besides achieving those results, our programs build community, reduce social isolation, and foster meaningful cross-cultural relationships.
