Mission: MARE mission is to advance global understanding of marine habitats and species, thereby helping marine scientists, policy makers, and resource stakeholders to best manage those resources. This is done by applying the latest marine exploration technologies to document underwater habitat, species abundance and diversity over time, and then effectively communicating that knowledge.
Programs: MARE major programs include: (a) Marine Protected Area (MPA) surveys/inventories; and (b) species-specific surveys/inventories. The MPA surveys/inventories encompass the exploration, survey and baseline quantification of fish in the protected and reference sites around California's Channel Islands. The species-specific surveys/inventories typically examine endangered species, such as the White Abalone. Data are provided to the California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG) and other regulatory and scientific organizations. The data assist in determining effectiveness of fisheries management practices and can be used to develop future practices and policies. These services will be expanded to other critical areas and species as funded.
