Programs: Parents as teachers, a home visitation program, supports first time parents and their children between the ages of birth to three years old. Personal monthly home visits with a certified parent educator address child development in language, cognition, motor skills, and social-emotional growth. Children in the program also receive scheduled developmental screenings to ensure appropriate development or early intervention as needed. Monthly group activities and information about community resources are shared with each family. Parents as teachers serve families with low risk factors and families with multiple risk factors.
the dfc grant supports the local, multi-organizational efforts to educate community members and schools on alcohol and other drug abuse aoda issues. These issues include: tracking new drugs and new drug trends, aoda use by adolescents, prevention strategies, treatment options, continuum of care plans, and public awareness campaigns. A committee of over 30 representatives from various local organizations, school districts, and county offices advise the work to be completed under the auspices of the dfc grant.
the literacy council helps low literacy adults who want to read, write, and speak english better. The adult students can be english language learners or english as a second language learner, both types of students seek to improve their english in order to support their own personal goals. Goals can be: supporting their child's school work, obtaining daily literacy skills, complete job applications or other forms or enroll in further education. Volunteer tutors receive training and provide one-to-one instruction to assist students to meet their goals.
the family resource center of sheboygan county is helping family well-being by: providing parenting information through parenting programs, community presentations, support groups, parent and child activities, and increasing access to community resources. Military families connect provides sheboygan area military families and their service members with support and access to local and state resources. Families participate in monthly meetings and receive monthly newsletters. Deployed service members receive care packages assembled by military families.
