Mission: Urgent Action Fund for Women’s Human Rights is a global women’s fund that protects, strengthens and sustains women and transgender human rights defenders at critical moments. We intervene quickly when activists are poised to make great gains or face serious threats to their lives and work. We use online, text and mobile funding applications to respond to requests from women’s human rights defenders within 72 hours and have funds on the ground within 1-7 days.
Results: In 2016, Urgent Action Fund provided nearly $1.5 million in 173 grants to grassroots women human rights defenders in the United States and around the world.
Target demographics: Women human rights defenders and activists working for equality and justice for women and LGBTQI people.
Direct beneficiaries per year: Over 150 grassroots activist groups and over 600 women human rights defenders.
Geographic areas served: Internationally and in the United States
Programs: Rapid Response Grantmaking (small, flexible grants for immediate security or advocacy needs delivered in 24-72 hours.) Advocacy and Alliance Building Access to activist security and wellbeing information and training.
