expeditions a cornerstone of mission blue is the expeditions program. Dr. Earle and the mission blue team travel to hope spots to explore, create awareness, foster partnerships, and build public and governmental support for the creation of marine protected areas. In 2016, expeditions included the gulf of california, where we urged mexican officials to create more mpas and to reduce the number of shark fin exports. Working with community leaders and scientists, we also organized public forums, presentations, and a snorkeling adventure with the children of cabo pulmo. During the mission blue ii expedition to papua new guinea and the solomon islands, we ignited support for protection of the coral triangle hope spot aboard the national geographic explorer. During the fall, we explored the balearic islands where we continued our efforts to support mission blues first hope spot in the mediterranean.
hope spot global framework with more than 300 official hope spot nominations submitted through our website to date and a partnership with iucn, sea is in the process of standardizing hope spot designations and creating an online management system that will guide communities and partners through the process of managing these potential marine protected areas. A hope spot advisory council has been established to maintain oversight for the development of criteria and methodology for hope spots and oversees approved processes and criteria for global nominations.
