This place is a God send! My fiancé and I spent a week here at the beginning of August and what they do there is absolutely amazing. The grounds are just stunning, the Volunteers are all angels, THE FOOD! Omg better than any 5 star restaurant cause you can tell they make it with love! We can't thank you enough for the amazing experiences, we definitely needed it! From kayaking to boat rides, the zoo, the lake, couples massages.. all memories we will never forget. The friendships made, we're such a blessing and my fiancé's service dog was definitely the mayor of the week and enjoyed being treated like the King he is!

I went to the Travis Mills Foundation for the Warrior PATHH program about a year and a half ago. I still tell everyone that it is one of the best things I have ever done. The staff is excellent, food is great, the programs are awesome and well organized, and everyone makes you feel welcome with no pressure.

I appreciated the incredible opportunity to attend the Travis Mills Foundation and complete the PATTH program. The staff was great, our mentors were incredible, the facility was beautiful, the meals were nutritious, and my seven other Teammates are freinds to this day. We still text and comment on our experiences together. I have tried other Veterans programs and this one was one of the best, most beneficial, and lifechanging. Keep up the good work. Thank you.

I spent over a week at TMF with the PATHH program, and I can tell you it was an incredible experience. As a 100% disabled veteran, the staff at TMF was nothing short of superior!!!! I have had the opportunity to meet Travis, and I can tell you that the TMF focus on recalibrating veterans is SUPERIOR!!!! I still practice some of the techniques I learned at the PATHH program!!!!

I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to attend the Warrior PATHH program hosted at TMF and it was an absolute game changer for me. From the program itself to the staff and facilities everything was thought out and intentional. I finally have hope for my future and without TMF and the PATHH program I am not sure I would have been around to see my first grandchild who is due this year. I can’t recommend TMF and PATHH enough, I am grateful to be able to post this review and to share a little of my story.

I had a wonderful time and tapped into some deep emotions that I needed to decompress from. This place gives you an opportunity to open up in a small-group setting and offers plenty of habits and tactics to help you thrive and not just survive. I loved working with the PATHH guides and meeting other veterans and first responders that share similar tragedies. I would recommend it to anyone struggling. They changed my life!

I have been to several veterans retreats to assist in my PTSD recovery. Travis Mills Foundation is by far the best! Our group is still texting and calling over a year after we "graduated" the class. The volunteers were focused and went the extra steps to help us in our recovery.

God Bless Travis Mills and his family and his foundation!

I was a 20 year full-time Paramedic with 27 total years in EMS. I burned out in 2010 and I haven’t worked since. I had tried 3 suicide attempts and met with many different counselors over the years.

I’m sure I wouldn’t be here today if it were not for Warrior PATHH. It is an intense, week long training program that requires one to stay on campus. Classes start at 0630 sharp and go until 1900-2200. The rest of the 90 days are done at home with daily lessons and reminders of the key points we were taught. “PTG”, Post Traumatic Growth. We also learned to Struggle Well !!!!

This program has prolonged my life. I’m in a steady and committed relationship with a remarkable woman. Thank you Travis Mills Foundation . . . . I thought I had been forgotten . . . .

I went through the TMF Warrior PATHH program in November of 2023. With a combined 20 years of time in the Marine Corps and law enforcement, I was an empty shell of a man. My life was growing darker and I didn’t know how to cope with my many experiences.
I went to the TMF out of desperation. When I arrived I was greeted by people just like me. People who were in my shoes, who were fighting for better lives for themselves and me. I’m scared to think about where I would be without the TMF. It allowed me to realize I wasn’t alone and there are ways to succeed and thrive.
The TMF pulled me out of the dark tunnel that I was stuck in and helped show me how to live my life. It truly was a life altering experience. Thank you!
It needs to be noted that the grounds, staff and food are absolutely amazing. It’s an incredible place that has helped so many people.

I attended the Jan. 2024 PATHH program at TMF. I don't even know how to say how much the experience and program means to me. The core staff were and amazing group of guys that have been through it. They care about everyone going through the course and it shows. The volunteers on site were amazing and it was apparent that they truly cared about the program and helping others. The grounds are great and there wasn't a second that I didn't feel welcomed. TMF and PATHH completely changed my life for the better and I would recommend the services offered there to anyone.

The Travis Mills Foundation changed my life; I attended the Warrior PATHH in February 2024. I walked in those doors a broken man after 14 years of service in Law Enforcement. I walked out changed forever. It is impossible express how professional, knowledgeable, dedicated, and kind the staff and volunteers were. The facilities and grounds were immaculate, and we had first-class accommodation. The instructors (Expert Guides) were knowledgeable and dedicated, and they all openly shared their experiences so that we could take inspiration from them and truly move forward beyond our traumas and build far better lives. What is most remarkable about this program at TMF is that it was 100% free for qualifying veterans, and first responders. You can tell that all the donations given to them are put to good work and not squandered. The one thing you should know about this program is that it is intense, but all the effort you put into it will change your life forever. I highly recommend The Travis Mills Foundation and, Specifically, Warrior PATHH if you are looking for help moving forward after service.

I know that many have said plenty of great things about this organization, the truth is, it is absolutely even better than what many have said, better than one can describe. It is peaceful, it is caring, it is fun and it is heartfelt how much the Staff and the Volunteers actually care about making the retreat a memorable family time, and with no pressure. We only have supreme gratitude for the TMF and the Travis Mills family for creating and doing these truly-caring programs focused on Veteran families. It is the purest family time that makes it so wonderful to take in, breathe and move life forward in a relaxing environment.

I am a three time combat wounded veteran. During my last tour in Iraq I was wounded three times. My wounds consisted of a broken neck, collapsed lung, fractured skull, and shrapnel wounds to my left leg. My wife and I attended two retreats at the Travis Mills Foundation and loved everything about it. During the retreat we were able to connect with other veteran couples who shared the same experiences and struggles we had. The Travis Mills Foundation introduced us to new activities and allowed us to j=check a few things off our bucket list. During the first retreat we participated in snowshoeing and were able to go dog sledding, two things we always wanted to do. The second retreat was during the Christmas holiday and the Travis Mills Foundation coordinated for the entire group to participate in a Christmas reef making class. While at the retreat everyone treats you like family and the food is AMAZING! The Travis Mills Foundation does so much for wounded warriors and their families.

Prior to my first TMF retreat I was isolated, over medicated, sleep deprived, and just existing through life but not really living. I had attended another veterans retreat not through Travis mills foundation in the early 2000’s. It was more of an intensive family/ ptsd focused retreat and was a bit too intense for my liking. Unfortunately it left me not wanting to attend other non profit retreats. Luckily for me my mother attended at Travis mills caregiver retreat around 2018. She returned from her trip only singing praises to the quality and overall positive experience from the TMF volunteers and retreat center. She was able to talk me into a winter retreat shortly after her return. I read so many positive online reviews that it gave me the confidence to attend. To say that I was blown away by my experience would be a massive understatement. From the moment I landed in Maine an overall since of calm took over me. From the compassion and friendliness of the volunteers who picks you up at the airport to the volunteer staff on sight. Everyone made sure I was comfortable and enjoying my stay from the moment I arrived. The experiences of ice fishing, dog sledding, swimming in the new wellness center, the excellent food, the wonderful and friendly staff really showed me people want to make a difference for our disabled veterans. Since attending I’ve gone on the Atlanta aquarium retreat, summer retreat, and plane pool event. Every time I attend I’m left in shock because the quality just improves. It’s hard to imagine a place that can improve from overall excellence, but that’s TMF. The friends, experiences, and connections I’ve made in the past 5 years have changed my life in truly profound ways. Now I find myself counting down the months between visits. I wish I could verbalize the overall welcoming and calming atmosphere that TMF provides to all their guests. I show up for the retreats stressed, tired, overwhelmed, and needing to take a break. By the time I leave I feel fully recharged and ready to take on life. I hope all our disabled veterans get a chance to visit TMF!

I’ve had some of the best experiences in my life at Travis mills! Just over 3 years ago was my first trip. I still recall the terrible condition i was in at the time. I barely slept, was on countless medication and did not trust people. I only went on the retreat because of the outstanding reviews from other veterans. I still recall the kindness and compassion of all the volunteers that helped me take those vital first steps in my recovery. Everyone was willing to listen to me talk about my challenges, offer words of encouragement and support, as well as providing a peaceful calming environment that i so desperately needed. To say that the Travis mills retreat played a major role in my recovery is a understatement. I’ve been so blessed to have had the opportunity of multiple retreats. I continue to look forward to future events and hope everyone at TMF knows how much they helped me in my recovery. Sincerely Joe Collins.

A retreat to Travis Mills feels like home. From a warm welcome, to those hard goodbyes with staff, and new “family” you meet along the way- time spent here is invaluable. You literally have no worries in the world when you’re there… you get to laugh (maybe the first time in a long time!) and you get to be surrounded by those who would understand you best. I can’t recommend this beautiful place enough. EVERY staff member and volunteer are so warm and kind. Truly amazing human beings. I am so lucky to have found them, and my kids love it just as much. Especially the friendships they have made along the way

TMF is a miracle. I am blessed to be in this family. That's truly what they are, family. They offer you this free retreat, but really it's to suck you in to their family and love you. I have been in this family for 3 years now. When coming to the retreat it's such an amazing thing. For a week I can mentally shut off. Everything is taken care of, food, activities, entertaining my kids, and just everything. I can decompress, I can relax, I can enjoy myself. They are amazing, people. Warm hearted, caring and loving. TMF, is one of those places where you feel like family. You bond with other families that have a common grounds that not everyone has or will experience. It gives a chance to just relax and be around people who get it ( life struggles ). Once you have spent time there and meet people from those that work there, volunteer their time there, or others who are there to enjoy a break. You can end up making new friendships and bonds. If you have a chance to go for a family retreat, a caregivers retreat, or a PATH (ive never done this one so only go off others who have). Go. it will change your life to some degree.

Just before school was due go back in session, we were offered a chance to go to Travis Mills. It was nice to be around other families who know some of daily struggles. To just take a step back and enjoy what is around. Make new friends.
Our boys lucked out and had kids around same age. Those 5 kids just had fun and not worry about much other than what time do we eat.
I have been telling other friends about this place. How enjoyable, friendly staff, and just an over all joy it was.

The facilities at the retreat are designed specifically for wounded warriors helping their confidence grow. The staff is amazing. They do everything possible to make the week a memorable one for the family. I would strongly recommend volunteering and supporting the Foundation financially if possible. I spent close to one year with our son at Walter Reed while he was rehabilitating from his wounds. During that time I met other care givers who were going through the same struggles. Bonds and friendships were formed during this period that will last a lifetime. The Travis Mills Foundation brought us together again to help with our healing. The laughter and tears we caregivers shared at the Travis Mills Foundation Retreat are beyond words. To say caregivers are blessed by this Foundation is truly an understatement.

My husband lost his legs In Afghanistan and is in a wheelchair most of the time. When we go to Travis Mills Foundation Retreat it is just that, a retreat. Because my husband is in a wheelchair, the places that we go for vacations end up being a lot of work for my husband. That is not the case at Travis Mills Foundation. The rooms are easy for him to get around, the vehicles we ride in, and the activities that we participate in are all set up for someone in a wheelchair. The retreat is a retreat and not work for my husband, which makes it a retreat for me as well.
We love the fact that we can come to the retreat and relax or be completely busy. There is no pressure to do any of the activities offered.
The people that work at the retreat are second to none. The people that volunteer with Travis Mills Retreat do so with their heart and it shows. We have become life long friends with many of them.
Travis Mills Foundation thinks of the whole family. We are all treated as family from everyone we meet during our stay.
My husband and I recommend this retreat to anyone who may benefit from a retreat like this.
We truly love it

We have been lucky enough to visit the Travis Mills Foundation summer retreat a couple of times now and each visit is somehow more amazing each time!!! We were already missing the families, staff and retreat as we headed back home thank you for having us!

I went this past June with my girlfriend and two kids(18/6) and there was so much for everyone to do! The kids really loved the heated indoor pool, scenic kayaking, and challenging ropes course. We loved the massages, archery and fishing.

From s'mores around the campfire to golfing and visiting a wildlife retreat, it's a fun-filled, jam-packed week. Did I mention it was free?? Even our luggage at the airport was pre-paid!

Not to mention the food delicious! Every day the kitchen put out some sweet baked goods after serving meals all day. And of course they won't have you visit Maine without having any lobster!

All this and so much more is available on their summer retreats from June - August when the weather is gorgeous! I hear they also have a winter retreat with dog sledding and ice fishing. Annnf Swimming with sharks at the Georgia Aquarium, the Warrior PATHH Program and the Recalibrate Program.

This organization really cares for the veteran community and wants to help us with our goals. No matter how big or small! I was even able to work one on one with a physical therapist while there that helped develop my own workout and stretch routine.

I highly recommend the Travis Mills Foundation as the greatest non-profit if you couldn't tell already!

Travis Mills Foundation invited my daughter and I for a visit last summer and it was easily the best trip I have ever taken in my life.. and I went to Disney World twice as a kid!

After becoming disabled with a Traumatic Brain Injury in 2013 it was hard to imagine I'd ever be able to take my daughter on a trip anywhere or even just myself. She turned 14 last year and was about to enter high school so the timing was perfect. Her memories of me before my injury were fading and physically I was deteriorating. The retreat to TMF played a major part in strengthening not only our connection but awakened the desire in myself to be the best version of myself that I can be. Last fall I was 300+ lbs with a walker and this spring I'm 190lbs with a ankle brace. Dramatic change inspired by TMF! That's the impact the retreat had on me.

Today my daughter and I talk for hours on the phone.. laughing and joking while I sprinkle in words of wisdom. I can really feel the love and that she values our relationship. She doesn't see me as someone broken or even limited. Or even surprised by the major gains or even changes I've made. That week in Maine had allowed us relaxing, fun, uninterrupted, real father/daughter time that is truly invaluable. We did things together that otherwise we might not ever have and it's something neither of us will ever forget.

I've emailed TMF multiple times saying all of this and more. Updating them with pictures and of my progress and thanking them profusely. So these words aren't just something written for this post. I could have easily written about the private plane ride, lobster and steak dinner, massages, boat rides, tubing, swimming, fishing, roller skating, bike riding, archery, rope challenge, horsebackriding, wildlife retreat.. the list goes on and on, you get the point. The impact though, how TMF really helps people. That is the point of all of this and the lasting effects there after!

I was fortunate enough to go to a week long caregiver retreat and also a family retreat for TMF.
The caregiver retreat far exceeding my expectations. They think of everything from comfort of the rooms, food, activities and much needed down time. I was able to connect with others in similar situations and just "be." I haven't been able to do that since my husband was injured 16 years ago. Some of the things that we did were glass turning (incredibly relaxing), cupcake decorating, game night (can't remember when I laughed so hard), a day of shopping and a much needed massage!
The family retreat was just as good. We had never been on anything like this and it was again great to connect with other caregivers, but more importantly for my children to connect with other children who have a similar story. What I found even more amazing, was that my husband was able to talk to other guys who just understood. He doesn't talk to anyone and he opened up. Some activities that we were fortunate enough to experience were boat rides, fishing, fly tying, leather stamping, games with our kids, the ropes course (my husband who is a spinal cord injury even gave the rock wall a try and made it to the top!), scavenger hunts and lots and LOTS of swimming!
I cannot thank them enough for what they provide for families like ours! TMF is truly an amazing experience!

One thing that stood out is that I, as the wife, was able to attend this and my husband did not have to participate prior in order for me to qualify. The environment from the start was caring and provided an opportunity to truly rest. We were able to do as much or as little as we wanted. TMF is a true blessing in our life. It has been a long time since i got hurt, but the ongoing struggles, day to day pressures and season of life my family is in gets a little chaotic at times. TMF is truly something we love coming to because we get to disconnect from the World and connect more as a family. The memories we talk about are always about the experiences we had at TMF. So grateful for this organization and their passion for families!! It is needed in this time and TMF does it right!!

It's hard to put into words, but it feels like going home. The love and support that you feel from every single staff and volunteer is amazing. Everything is accessible, the rooms, the activities, even the golf carts. Our times at TMF brought out family closer together. Our time there helped us to figure out what activities my husband could still participate in and what modifications were needed. LOVE LOVE LOVE Travis Mills Foundation.

The staff, volunteers, grounds, food, activities and the accommodations are out of this world!!! We moved to Maine in 2017 and started attending TMF in February 2020, our closest family being 750 miles away..... Our children and family consider TMF as family as they are only 45 minutes from us and the closest family we know. We see our TMF family more than our family from out of state. They make us feel loved, happy, and recharged after visiting.... and we pick up conversations that we left on during the last visit. The food and grounds are absolutely magazine worthy!! The new state of the art wellness center is something we look forward to visiting and the activities that the retreat provides are something that can be adapted and loved by the whole family. Yoga classes and massages are rejuvenating!!! Thank you, thank you for all you do!!! The Wofford Family

We attended a family retreat over the summer at the Travis Mills Foundation. When I had my amputation and subsequent surgeries, I found quite a bit of support in the military and veteran communities for me, the amputee. What sets the Travis Mills Foundation apart is they serve the entire family, recognizing that meeting the needs of the injured includes supporting their relationships with the people closest to them. I want to be active and enjoy the things I did before my amputation, but I want to do them with my husband and daughter. The staff and volunteers welcomed us with open arms, they had activities for couples, for kids-- a whole play room and movie room, and their chef even made cupcakes when she heard my daughter's birthday was that week. The food was seriously delicious with lots of variety to appeal to the kids and designed for the dietary needs/allergies of the families. I really think they thought of everything, for the rooms, for the daily schedules and timing of activities, and the true accessibility of the facilities, not just making the minimum standards. It is absolutely incredible what the staff, volunteers and donors are able to provide to so many families. The best part was the friendships we made and that we stay in touch well after the retreat, that the impacts of the retreat linger much longer than the actual time we were there.

Everyone is so appreciative of our time and I think I can speak for others that what we get back is way more than what we give. I look forward to many years with my TMF family. ❤️

I started volunteering with TMF at a point in my life that direction was something I had been searching for. In volunteering and the staff, I found a place where I was helping others, but not just that, I was able to awaken skills that had been dormant for a very long time. I threw myself into activities, and found an incredible group of individuals who shared a common goal and passion. I talk about the Foundation, its services and facilities, and those who make the engine run every opportunity I can. I discovered this year that one of the high school students in my Advisory class has run Miles 4 Mills before!! I'm looking forward to bringing my students to the retreat this winter to volunteer, and to share my love of the Foundation with them.

I love the opportunities of meeting new people that volunteering my time has afforded me. I count some of the other volunteers as dear friends, and know my life has been enriched for having met and worked along side them. I can think of no better organization to dedicate my time to, and to carve out a niche for in my life.

From the team at Coastal-When you stand back and reflect on past decisions, your hope is that your motivation was pure, your intent clear, and the result worthwhile. Having the chance to add value to another is the least we can do in helping one another. We started with Travis Mills when it was blossoming idea in Travis's thoughts. To continue to be of assistance and watch the many lives this mission impacts has been a most worthwhile contribution to the men and women who offered their lives to protect our chance to be of service. If you have the ability we encourage you to become a part of this mission. You can help. They could use your talents as a volunteer, a driver, a landscaper, a welcome greeter or simply any amount in donation. Rest assured, your contribution of time or money is a wise investment. You will be proud.

These guys are amazing. The first time we attended a family retreat. I had no idea what to expect. They took care of us from the airport all the way to the facilities and back. We had some issues with the airline, but TMF made sure we had a place to stay when we got stuck and some of their amazing volunteers drove several hours to come get us. As a spouse and caregiver, I did not realize just how tense I was until I attended a retreat. It was amazing to truly be able to unwind and get to know other families in similar circumstances. The facilities are well maintained. You should see the mow lines in the lawn. Perfection! The lake front is also fantastic. You can do as much or as little as you please. They make you feel like family here. They also connect you with so many other resources to help both veteran and families. I can't wait to go again and meet many new people.

My daughter and I was lucky enough to visit the Travis Mills Foundation for a retreat this summer
We also went in 2019 and I wrote an in depth thousand word review that's still below with a similar picture!

If I still have your attention, go take a look at it... I'll wait (it's worth it!)

Annd that is the type of impact they provide to the veteran community. I am forever grateful. Thank you!

During the year of 2020 they started a book club, offered financial assistance, shipped multiple crafts/games, virtual yoga/exercise etc. Whatever they could probably come up with to provide a reprieve and outlet for veterans and their families!
All they ask from you is to let them.

The Travis Mills Foundation is amazing! We were lucky enough to attend one of the family summer retreat weeks, and had a wonderful time. Its hard for our family to go new places on vacation because we never know how accessible they will be for a wheelchair. But everything at the TMF retreat was accessible and accommodating so that our whole family could participate. We were able to relax and enjoy without worry, which for us is priceless. The staff is exceptional and will go out of their way to help you with anything. TMF is the best of the best!

My boys and I have had two visits to TMF; one in the summer and one in the winter. I would go back a thousand more times if I could. Our most recent visit, I had been having some mental health issues where I was just sad. I got the email that we were going back to TMF, and my entire mood changed. My boys and I looked forward to it for months. We got to fly on a private jet, which my boys thought was the coolest thing ever. The volunteers were the best and made sure we were all settled in. We spent the week doing art projects, swimming In The lake, playing board games, fishing and eating some amazing food. My boys and I made some great friends and we got to connect on a level that is t available outside of other military families. For my boys, other kids just don’t quite understand what it’s like to have a parent (mom) that was injured in the service. I can thank TMF and all the staff and volunteers for helping me out of my family no I was in and giving my family the time we needed to connect.

Our family has been fortunate to be a part of TMF for many years. They are unlike any other foundation that serves catastrophically wounded service members. The retreat truly serves as a retreat for families. When we are there we don’t worry about “what daddy can do” because we know they have already thought it all through. They have given us a chance to challenge ourselves as a family and as individuals. We absolutely love our time there and look forward to it each year.

Since I live south of Portland, traveling 1-1/2 hours each way can be challenging at times, but always worth the effort to volunteer at the TMF Retreat.

My name is Rick Stephens. It has been a distinct honor and privilege to be involved with the Travis Mills Foundation since 2014, serving our recalibrated veterans and their families. The dedication and professionalism displayed by Travis and his family, staff, volunteers and donors is nothing short of awe inspiring. There are endless opportunities this organization provides to give back to those who have sacrificed so much for our freedom and security. If you're looking for a chance to give back to Travis and his fellow veterans, look no further. Serving as a TMF volunteer has provided me so many blessings, too many to mention but here is one experience I'll never forget. A group of veterans were taken on an evening kayak outing, guided by a trained staff of volunteers, adapting each kayak so everyone could power their own craft. Outfitting, instruction and safety checks complete, off they went, leaving many anxious family members on shore to await their return or load onto my pontoon boat for a cruise. Returning toward the dock after a nice long cruise we spotted the kayakers in the distance, perfect, straight line formation as they paddled. One of the children asked to get a closer look as her Daddy was out there. We ventured toward them but stayed a safe distance away, cutting the engine to stop and give them plenty of space and then it happened. The kids all started waving and yelling to Mom or Dad and the kayakers broke ranks, formed a perfect V formation and headed right for us, kids saying "That's my Dad, my Mom!" Cheering them on, many kids and spouses with tears in their eyes. Kayakers were pumping paddles in the air in triumph, grinning from ear to ear! They gathered themselves to continue the paddle as I returned the families to the dock. Everyone was so gracious, thanking me for the cruise and one Mom who must have noticed how the wind was making my "eyes water" provided some insight to what I had just witnessed. Her children, including the little girl who asked me to get them closer so she could see her Dad had not seen their Dad smile in six months but there he was, huge smile, raising his paddle to wave and celebrate his personal breakthrough with his family and all of us. They got their Dad back!

I have been a volunteer at the Travis Mills Foundation since it opened. The first year my wife and I cleaned rooms, the second and third years, I transported re-calibrated Veterans to and from Airports, and did lobster runs, picking up donated lobsters up and down the Maine coast for the weekly lobster bakes. As a 71 year old Vietnam Veteran, who's done volunteer work for the past 20 years, nothing compares to the experience and honor of volunteering for Travis and meeting these warriors that have given so much for their country. Travis even puts on a breakfast for Vietnam era Veterans each year. After 4 years, I still look forward to each trip.

The Travis Mills Foundation never rests, they are always moving forward. They are an ever evolving organization with leaders, staff and volunteers that consistently seek to build upon their exceptional programming to broaden the positive impact on those they serve.

As a veteran myself, I always seek to serve on honorable, ethical and professional teams that truly make a difference in people's lives. My service as a volunteer at the Travis Mills Foundation has been one of the most valuable and rewarding experiences of my life. The staff always make me feel like a valued member of the team and I know I am part of something much larger than myself.

I met Travis for the first time at the spring open house in 2018 prior to the official opening of the retreat. A line of people, over a block long, waited patently to have a personal conversation with him. Each family was given an unlimited amount of time, including having their photo taken by one of his assistants, with your camera. My wife, adult daughter and I probably spent less than five minutes with him but as I walked away, I said to myself I had to do something for this man.
I went home and called up an on-line volunteer application. As I scrolled through the volunteer possibilities, it became obvious it was going to be a little difficult to find something for a then 79-year-old portly man with bad legs to do. Since I was and am in almost perfect health, except for the diabetic neuropathy in my lower legs, I applied as an airport driver and was accepted.
This would have been my third season of driving our recalibrated vets and their families to and from Maine's airports to the retreat and their Rome vacation - although we did get one trip in before the lockdown.
What a truly outstanding, rewarding experience this has been, meeting our vets and their families and in other, separate weeks, meeting their moms, dads and wives, brought to the Belgrade Lakes region - all at no cost to any of them. They are absolutely remarkable people who have given me, you and our country so much more than we could ever give back.
But I can say, unequivocally, the Travis Mills Foundation sure is doing it's best, under the leadership of a truly outstanding individual, who has been where they are.

I am a retired Naval Officer with 22 years of service. I volunteer for the Travis Mills Foundation in support of recalibrated veterans and their families. The Foundation is one of a small handful of veteran service organizations that help the whole family take their next steps in their journey. The Travis Mills Foundation retreat center offers an all expense paid, no barriers and all inclusive vacation in Maine where they participate in adaptive activities, bond with other veteran families, and enjoy rest and relaxation in Maine’s outdoors.

I have two experiences that highlight what can happen here for families. First, while out on my boat, I was in the vicinity of two tandem kayaker's , father and son. The two boys (9 or 10 years old) were having a conversation:
"My Dad just got a new set of blades and he can outrun a cheetah!"
the second boy replies: "That's cool, but my Dad just got a new set of swim legs and he can out swim Bruce (in Finding Nemo)!"
Where else can two little boys have this conversation?

The second experience was overhearing a conversation between a staff member and a young girl about her experience at the Travis Mills Foundation Retreat. Her response:
"It is better than Disney World!"

To watch the families arrive at the retreat, usually a little timid, but excited and then five short days later, departing with tears in their eyes as they say good bye to their new friends is inspirational.

The retreat serves 100's of families every year, with over 700 Volunteers from 34 states helping to make it all happen.

I loved how it is family oriented. My daughter was three at the time (she is now six) and she still talks about the trip to Maine And how she can’t wait to go back. Being able to see old friends and meet new ones. It was such a special time for us. My mother-in-law was able to go many months later to spend time with other wounded warriors mothers.my husbands injuries took a toll on our whole family so I love that the foundation supports all parts of the family! Thankful for all that y’all do. And hopefully life will slow down enough for us to be able to visit again soon

Travis Mills is an amazing person and i hope more people will take a few minutes to learn about this man and the amazing work his foundation is doing to help our wounded veterans. Our local CBS TV station just aired a story last night about a major project this foundation is working on, and the story is posted at http://www.wgme.com/news/features/top-stories/stories/healing-heroes-retreat-americas-wounded-31205.shtml#.Vrcg2098vIw for all to see. It's called “Healing Heroes: A Retreat for America's Wounded” and is in need of both volunteer help and donations. The more I learn about this foundation and Travis Mills himself, the more I want to donate as mush as I can afford.

I first became aware of Travis and his foundation when he was interviewed on a FOX News program. What an amazing young man!! I visited the website and learned more about Travis' mission and vision, then began making monthly donations (that work with my personal budget). It was a simple process to begin and since then I receive regular updates on the project's process. I encourage others to join in this effort to support our veterans and their families.
