I’m a survivor of 2 kinds of cancer — and old enough to remember the great Gilda Radner and her courage in the face of ovarian cancer. That’s why, after my lymphoma diagnosis 5 years ago, I sought out Gilda’s Club. It was everything I hoped for, and more. Programming, education, advocacy and support — all free to people touched by that monster, cancer. A great surprise for me was the club’s therapeutic art programs. I would gladly pay for these programs and consider it an investment in my physical and spiritual health. But it’s free to me, thanks to Gilda’s Club supporters.
One thing I hear a lot from cancer survivors whom I invite to Gilda’s Club: “I don’t want to sit around all the time and talk about cancer.” Well…except in support groups (for specific types of cancer), we really don’t. We go to parties, sip tea in the dining room, or work on our projects in the art studio — and in those places, we’re just people from Wisconsin, with lots of different life experiences and perspectives. But it’s nice to be around b people who “get it” about “chemo brain,” leaky drains, radiation-induced fatigue, fights with insurance companies and other aspects of the cancer experience. We don’t have to say it. We just know. And that’s golden.
The photos show art I’ve made in Gilda’s Club therapeutic art programs.

Gilda's Club has been the answer to the questions we didn't know we had. When we learned that my daughters' dad and my ex-husband/their father was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic and liver cancer, deep down, we knew this was a game of time. We went to Gilda's not knowing much about it, not knowing if it was a place for us. It was more than a place. It was a community of support where people who were also battling time and cancer could come together to eat, share, cry, and laugh. Gilda's provided support groups for my teen daughter, my young daughter, and for me as a friend or family member of someone with cancer. Tuesdays, the night of our groups, are a sacred night in our household where we all know that Gilda's Club is the place where we can connect, reflect, and regroup for the week. Our family is grateful for the love and friendship we've created during our 14-months at Gilda's Club.

I am a cancer survivor and volunteer who found that the Gild's club is an amazing support for cancer patients and their families. I almost died of cancer and found the meetings for cancer patients, care givers, adolecents, and children were very supportive. There are also diet, exercise, and cancer information programs that are very helpful. The club is very well run and uses many volunteers as well as professional counselors to lead programs. I highly recomend the Gilda's club for any person having cancer or having family or friends with cancer.
