The Candlelighters have been a major part of our lives for year. Thanks for all of the amazing events you put on for my kids and all the rest. You turn the experience illness into a gift.
I love DCCandlelighters for all the amazing parties, the educational moments, the support they provide for families with a child battling cancer. DC Candlelighters is unique because there are no paid positions everyone is a volunteer.
DC Candlelighters is a fabulous organization! They provide educational resources on childhood cancer issues in the form of books and parent meetings. A lot of the Board members have all either had a child diagnosed with cancer, or they work in the pediatric oncology profession. They are willing to talk to newly diagnosed families and even stop by Fairfax Hospital with treats once a month and meet with inpatient families and make themselves available to anyone who needs to talk.
They also provide fun activities for families like the annual Mother/Daughter Spa Night, Father/Son Night, Halloween Party, Bingo Night, and the Holiday party.
They also provide financial assistance to families in need who are in treatment. And best of all, every single dollar raised goes right back to the families. They have no paid staff - it's an all-volunteer organization.
If you are a family in need of support, be sure and contact them. If you would like to volunteer, we would love to have you! Just email DCCandlelighters@Gmail.com.
If you would like to make a donation, you can do that on the website at www.dccandlelighters.org.
I became involved with Candlelighters because as a nurse and manager of a Pediatric Oncology unit I met many of the mothers and fathers of the children who have or have had cancer. This organization was started by these parents who want to assist families in many ways by supporting them through a very difficult journey. Activities are planned throughout the year for the entire family that are social, educational and supportive. Now that I’ve semi retired I’m able to give back to the families and children that go on this journey by donating my time to this organization in their mission. It’s an amazing group of individuals
When our daughter was going through Childhood Cancer, DC Candlelighters was the first organization that we met at the hospital. They were so welcoming to talk to being in the hospital, and all of the events they have every year for families with children fighting cancer are so much fun! From the Mother Daughter Spa night to the annual Halloween Party, we got to forget about the treatments and enjoy life again at their events. After my daughter ended her treatment I was honored to join the board and serve other families that are going through what we did, and provide them smiles and that glowing candle they so desperately need!
We have a 2 yr. old daughter w/ active treatment for Leukemia, ALL. The educational and emotional support that our family have received from DC Candlelighters in the past year has been beyond our expectactions. Thanks to them our family has adjusted well to many changes that living w/ a child w/ cancer brings along. From learning how to properly feed our little one to how and what questions to ask at our oncology appts. They have also blessed us by helping us pay some bills that would otherwise not being paid on time. For their tremendous help and support we think DC Candlelighters deserve all the help they can get to keep helping people like us. Thank you so much!!!
