Causes: Crime & Law, Domestic Violence, Protection Against Abuse
Mission: Educating and assisting domestic violence shelters in creating on-site pet housing so as to reduce barriers to safety for families with pets fleeing abusive homes. Our vision is for every domestic violence shelter in the U.S. and internationally to recognize that families with pets need safe housing from violence and for shelters to work hand-in-hand with SAF-T to create the best and easiest housing model for pets.
Results: As a result of the SAF-T Start-Manual (first published in 2008 and now in its 3rd edition), approximately 300 domestic violence shelters have built onsite pet housing programs in 46 states along with shelters in Australia, Canada, Netherlands, and Spain.
Target demographics: Helping domestic violence shelters to create onsite pet housing systems through a proven and sustainable system set forth in the SAF-T Start-Up Manual
Direct beneficiaries per year: approximately 300 pet-friendly domestic violence shelters to offer assistance to families with pets seeking safe housing from domestic violence.

Programs: SAF-T offers the SAF-T Start-Up Manual (free to domestic violence shelters), an online listing of pet-friendly SAF-T shelters, in-person and online trainings on the SAF-T Program and how animal abuse links to family violence, and technical assistance from SAF-T experts in animal protection, domestic violence, shelter management and fundraising.
