I'm really lucky to serve on this board! The Literacy Coalition of Kokomo/Howard County is an excellent organization with a truly dedicated executive director who actively looks for opportunities to improve the program and its services, and implements them wherever possible.
I have been a member of the board and volunteer with this organization for a number of years. I have seen the impact the Literacy Coalition has made on our community over the years. We work hard to involve those who could take advantage of the services offered and recruit suitable tutors to help all the students who sign up.
I came in here as a tutor helping anyone that I could and thanks to the literacy coalition. I have now went on to go back to school myself. I am working on obtaining my bachelors degree in business administration with specialization in entrepreneurship. I had learned so much that I wanted to pursue something greater for myself
My kids and I participated in the scavenger hunt for the literacy coalition. We learned so many things about Kokomo, spent quality time together, and helped a good cause. It’s so nice to unhook from electronics and tune into family time with a worthy cause. We will absolutely make this a new tradition!
I have a background in education and was interested in sharing my experience with adult learners. I began as a substitute tutor for the Literacy Coalition and eventually started working with students on a longer term. I have worked with people from non-English backgrounds as well as those who grew up speaking American English. My greatest satisfaction has come from working with a young man who has dyslexia for the past 4 years. He has a high school diploma, a great vocabulary and is quite successful in his personal life, but sometimes he still struggles with basic pronunciation. Since working with him, I have seen his get a job in a better environment with better pay, find a lovely lady and have a new baby that he now reads to. When he is ready to move on, I hope to find another student wishing to work so hard and make as great an improvement.
The Literacy Coalition has the right materials and environment to allow this type of progress to be made. The staff is friendly and helpful. The board members work hard to support the staff and organization to make the greatest impact on our community.
This nonprofit serves as a learning center for Howard County, helping residents who have trouble with reading , writing and math. As the marketing chair of this Kokomo not-for-profit, I wrote a comprehensive marketing plan, complete with advertising that included radio, video, print and social media to help promote this organization, plus increase donations to its cause.
I am a retired public school teacher that likes to volunteer. Teaching at the literacy coalition for several years has been very rewarding. The staff has worked very hard to match me up with students I can help the most. I am currently meeting with a Spanish lady who is working on her H.S. equivalency test. She is so smart and learns new things quickly. I am so pleased when she can state the grammar rule for correcting a written piece. Her math skills are becoming quite advanced. She expresses excitement at being able to keep up with her "gifted" middle school daughter and to help her younger elementary school daughter. The family has gotten a dog after much discussion with me and are doing a superlative job loving and training him.
I also meet with a Chinese lady who is well educated but needs translation of American customs. She needs help getting her three young children the best services and still retaining their own culture. She runs a business and needed communication skills to talk to her employees. When we discuss the work situation she often ask me to stop so she can write down what she might say.
As you can see this is a wonderful experience for me. I feel as though I am making a difference in the lives of two charming families.
