Mission: The Black Girls Mental Health Foundation (The Foundation) is an integral part of our broader mission at the Black Girls Mental Health Collective (The Collective) to enhance the well-being of Black mothers. At The Foundation, we focus on systemic change through conducting advanced research and comprehensive evaluation; and through offerings of therapy vouchers for low income Black women who have limited or no access to maternal mental health services and by providing scholarships for perinatal mental health trainings for medical providers and birth workers. Our efforts will allow us, our community partners, and our scholarship recipients to directly support Black women during the perinatal period and beyond.
Results: With over 30 years of combined experience, BGMHCF has successfully served vulnerable African American communities by delivering mental health services that are accessible, culturally sensitive, and responsive to community needs. Our clinicians have provided more than 20,000 hours of clinical support to over 2,000 youth and their families, including at-promise youth facing chronic absenteeism, family instability, and socioeconomic challenges. BGMHCF brings specialized expertise in Perinatal Mental Health which includes Perinatal Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Perinatal-Child Parent Psychotherapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health—approaches proven effective for minority youth. Our team’s dedication is reflected in our 33 peer-reviewed publications that contribute to advancing trauma-informed practices for African American populations. By working within diverse systems, including the Department of Family and Children Services and school-based programs, we address the complex intersections of race, trauma, and mental health disparities. And in 2024 alone, we saw over 150 clients, completing 671 therapy sessions. Among these, 98% identified as members of the BIPOC community—a testament to our mission of serving those most impacted by systemic inequities.
