Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Astronomy, Technology

Mission: The Astronomical Society of Southern New England (ASSNE) is a non-profit association of amateur astronomers, founded in 1995. Our mission is "to educate and inspire," and to spread the joy of astronomy. Our members donate countless volunteer hours through observing nights and educational/outreach programs for schools, libraries, non-profit organizations, and our communities. We participate in monthly outreach events at Moose Hill Wildlife Sanctuary (Mass Audubon) and the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth and host an annual Astronomy Day event in Barrington, RI. Ten meetings a year feature speakers, demonstrations and outdoor observing and are open to the public as well.

The group has a range from newcomer to experienced amater astronomer, but all have the interest in the cosmos and the passion to share those experiences to any who will listen. Their most recent event was on August 21,the day of the Great American Eclipse. The membership was scattered all over south eastern Massachusetts and northern Rhode Island, showing the public one of nature's most spectacular displays. Club members handed out free solar glasses, plus views through the members personal telescopes that had "Sun funnels" , a device attached to the telescope's optical system that projects the image onto a viewing screen. They were the hit of the day, and so were the members of the club. Jerry Trahan
