Mission: Wayne State University is a national research university with an urban teaching and service mission. As a national research university with a global vision, Wayne State is committed to high standards in research and scholarship. As an urban teaching university, and because its graduates typically remain to live and work in the area throughout their lives, Wayne State seeks especially to serve residents of the greater Detroit metropolitan area, recognizes its obligation to develop special avenues that encourage access for promising students from disadvantaged educational backgrounds and aspires to implement its curricula in ways that serve the needs of a nontraditional student population that is racially and ethnically diverse.

Programs: AMUS Rapid Response service initiatives are designed to assist residents, as well as city, state and federal agencies in reducing the impact on residents’ home health and well-being in crisis situations as the COVID-19 pandemic and recent flooding, as well as more enduring hazards such as the presence of lead and other contaminants in household water supplies. Our members implement and support response strategies designed to provide crisis awareness, education, and access to resources to reduce or eliminate threats to public health and safety. Member activities include community organizing, event coordination and the use of surveys, leafleting, community meetings and social media to gather data, communicate vital information, and implement strategic response strategies. Target neighborhoods are defined by Detroit Police Precinct boundaries, Detroit City Council Districts, or Detroit Health Department / Michigan Department of Health and Human Services directives. Members, program staff and community partners collaborate to build strategies to engage and serve vulnerable and underserved communities.
