Lewis & Clark Montessori Charter School

LCMCS continues to work to provide a wonderful education for students. This includes an emphasis on the Montessori philosophy and method, and in maintaining and expanding a thoughtful and supportive community. I have been very impressed with efforts to serve and engage with the local community through the farm program, farmers markets, and other efforts.

My grandson has been in Montessori schools since he started school and at LCMCS for the last two years. He is thriving there. The strong community, dedicated teachers, and caring administration make it easy to recommend his school to anyone looking for a child centered and respectful educational approach.

As one of the founding families, we have been invested in this community since the beginning. It has been a wonderful place for our children to learn and grow.

Our older child is now a high-school junior, who excels in their honors (IB) classes and is associate editor of the school newspaper. Their years at Lewis & Clark not only gave them an excellent academic grounding, but also fostered healthy independence, leadership, and the confidence to ask difficult questions of those in authority.

Our younger child, an eighth-year in MAC, has enjoyed and benefited from the Montessori environment, the 3-year class structure, his fellow students, and the amazing guides and staff. He will enter high school next year ready to tackle the world with humor, intelligence, and grace.

We are so glad that our children had the opportunity for a quality Montessori education, tuition-free, as as option in our public school district. We are all richer for the experience, and hope that many more families will be able to enjoy this life-changing resource.

I love LCMCS and have a lot of excellent things to say. Unfortunately, I'm awful at mobile apps! I've lost my comments twice. Here's the summary: this place is amazing! LCMCS grows people and community, not just scores or isolated skills. Come for the education, stay for the community.

LCMCS has been my professional home for 10 years, this coming February. I am a politically active person, and it has been a little difficult for me at times to work in a school whose members are not represented by a union, and whose existence could be seen as undermining the robustness of our public school system. I am a firm believer in education equity, in the public funding of schools, and the need for high quality schools for all.

But I have also seen the ways that LCMCS, a charter school with a clear mission, has been able to quickly adapt to the needs of an individual child, a family, or a staff member. There is freedom in our school to respond and latitude in how we can respond, and respond we do, in such beautiful ways, every day.

We attempt to be "friendly with the errors" of everyone in our community; we trust each other to do our best, and that, when we know better, we will do better. Our beautiful "cosmic curriculum" puts the keys to the world in a child's hand, and our teachers are devoted to doing just that while being mindful of what the state of OR asks of us. It is not easy to please two masters, but we attempt to do that while keeping our focus on our relationships with and the social, emotional, and academic growth of the children we serve.

I am constantly amazed at the good-naturedness and the flexibility of our staff, the genuine love for each other, for the children we get to work with, and the families in our community. It has been a gift to be allowed to grow in and with this community.

This school made a sizable difference to our daughters self confidence, practical life experience (using zippers and buttons, sewing, pouring water, etc.) and most importantly got her excited to learn the core academics. We have been especially impressed with the teachers we have had so far, and how they handle conflict using positive disciple and natural consequences as learning tools.

LCMCS is a great school that is a good fit for many different types of learners. The Montessori approach is unique and can work for both independent students and those needing extra help. Academics is a top priority here but the school also sees value in teaching social skills that help with problem solving, conflict resolution and character building. All skills that will be used long after graduation. A huge strength I have observed during our 10+ years here is the true collaborative effort between parents, teachers, and staff to help our kids navigate through whatever life throws at them.

I have had a child in attendance at Lewis and Clark Montessori for 11 of the 12 years the school has been open. We love Montessori and my children enjoy going to school every day. The close knit community and the opportunity to go to school with the same people k-8 has been amazing. My 2 children learn very differently - one works quickly and likes to work ahead of grade level and not be tied down to a desk while the other is slow and methodical and appreciates the long work periods. Both have learned to be independent, strong leaders, and I don't believe they would have thrived in a traditional classroom. Montessori has been the best choice for us, and I am so glad we have this school as an alternative to our neighborhood school.

My Grandchildren have attended Lewis and Clark for almost 8 years, I have been a part of this school from the beginning, it has been amazing to watch its growth over the years. The teachers and staff are kind and genuinely care about the students success. There is no place else I would want my Grandchildren to attend.

We have been a part of Lewis and Clark Montessori family for 8 years. This community is amazing and the teachers and administration truly care about the students. There is no one size fits all here, they spend a lot of time determining what your child needs to be successful and put plans in place to ensure the kids have what they need. My son has felt very much at home at LCMCS, which was important to both of us because we had homeschooled for 3 years before. It was always my goal to nurture my children's sense of curiosity and I find that the school holds this attitude as well. My son went from shy and reticent about joining to being one of the kids with a project to present almost every week. The school itself is full of kind, nurturing and warm teachers and staff. We've had a great experience and are so grateful to be part of this school.

We've had nothing but fantastic experiences from the first day at Lewis and Clark. The classroom experience not only teach children a wide range of skills and information, the guides allow children the freedom to discovery the learning style that fits them best. School was a struggle for our daughter, now she has a much better grasp of the concepts and social skills necessary to be a productive and successful adult. All my children are thriving in the supportive community that embodies Lewis and Clark Montessori Charter School.

We feel very fortunate to be a part of this growing and thriving school and community. Starting in a couple of rooms at the end of a hallway in a church only 10 years ago to filling up an entire school now, it’s hard to deny what can be achieved when families and dedicated teachers come together to enrich children in the best possible way.

We are lucky to call Lewis & Clark Montessori Charter School home now after having a bad experience at another school. In the middle of her third grade year, our daughter came home and told us that she no longer wanted to attend the private school she had been at since Kindergarten. She was unhappy and was not finding fulfillment at her school. At LCMCS, she has found her happiness and has blossomed! The staff, guides, parents, and fellow students have all had a part in helping her to succeed. This school is magnificent. Everyone is there to help one another. The curriculum is challenging and diverse and each student progresses at their level - not their neighbors. I cannot say this loudly enough - we LOVE this school!

We have been lucky to call Lewis and Clark Montessori our home for the past 10 years. I have two teenagers, one now in high school and the other in middle school, still at Lewis and Clark. There is no other place I would want them to be. We have a great community, great teachers and administrators. My husband and I truly feel lucky to be part of this thriving community. Every child is well cared for and met exactly where they are and needs are accommodated. They have helped both of my children through difficult times with care and nurturing.

Lewis and Clark Montessori Charter School provides a unique home for children of all different learning styles to grow. As a public charter school, LCMCS faces challenges other Montessori schools may not see, and tackles them with grace and determination. As a Montessori school the children's emotional and social development is valued as much as their academic achievement. The staff is caring and goes above and beyond to make sure kids are learning in a safe environment. I particularly love the healthy school lunch program and the many electives offered!

Lewis and Clark Montessori School has been the holistic education that we were seeking for our girls. It has been a place that has given them the freedom to explore their interests while getting an outstanding education! It is a place that fosters creativity, kindness, community and independence. Not only are they getting an incredible education in the traditional sense, but they are developing a love of learning that will stay with them their whole life! I love the student-planned educational outings, the outdoor learning experiences (including outdoor school overnight trips), the reports that are shared by the students dressed as the historical characters they have researched, the inclusion of art in their learnings, the classroom structure of staying in same class with same teacher/children for 3 years, the sense of community at the school and so much more. I love my school community and am so grateful that there is this affordable charter school option that provides the same quality education as a private Montessori school.

Our children thrive at Lewis and Clark. They're given the freedom to make choices in a controlled, organized environment. The staff is attentive, caring and they understand that every child is a unique human with individual needs. Our children enjoy practicing their math facts and honing their cursive skills just as much as they love spotting and identifying birds, mushrooms, clouds and trees. Our family is very thankful for all the hard work LCMCS puts into the social, emotional and education development of our children.

My family is proud to call Lewis and Clark Montessori Charter School our “school of choice” for the past 5 years. It has been an incredible experience to see how my kids have grown and matured since they arrived at LCMCS in Kindergarten and 2nd grade.

I believe my children are receiving a world class education from the talented, devoted and incredibly well educated staff that guide their learning on a daily basis. My kids rarely say “Mom, I don’t want to go to school today.” Instead they say “Mom, I don’t want to be late because I don’t want to miss anything.”

What I believe our school excels at even more than sparking young minds with curiosity and igniting imaginations, is teaching them to have compassion, communication skills, empathy, kindness, honor, social justice awareness, vulnerability, patience, and collaboration to become decent human beings in a world that desperately needs them.

This is our family's third year to be a member of the Lewis and Clark Montessori Charter School family. Our children both started in the primary classroom and our oldest has now been in upper elementary for a little over a year. What we have at LCMCS is such a blessing. A private Montessori education can cost thousands of dollars a year and the quality of education that our children receive here is to the same standards as any of the private Montessori schools. The guides are well-trained and follow the individual's lead. It is such a wonderful experience to observe the classrooms, how busy the children are, how much concentration and care they give the materials, and how they joyfully work alongside with each other, the older students mentoring and teaching the younger ones.

I have also been employed at the school since the beginning of this school year. My job allows me to observe the staff and students. Daily I see how the students care for their environment, how they problem solve together, how they practice grace and courtesy, and so much more.

Since my children are so young I've had less experience with the middle school (MAC) children, but because of my job this year I am able to interact with them more. I am very impressed with the programs that they participate in, like their outreach programs (feeding the senior citizens of our community) and starting a bread-baking business. There are so many lessons learned during activities like these and it's a lot more fun and effective way to learn than sitting at a desk listening to lectures all day.

We love this school and I am thankful everyday for the staff that guide and encourage my children and for the amazing education they are receiving!

I have three blessings from Lewis and Clark Montessori.

A child who has graduated 8th grade, with a great work ethic, a respect for education and the ability to communicate with peers and adults.

A child in 6th grade who shows compassion for his peers, a curiosity for knowledge and a passion for reading both for enjoyment and to learn.

A job that I truly enjoy and feel that I am doing something to help children be their best selves.

Lewis and Clark is really the definition of a community and a perfect example of how a caring community can help shape young minds and grow amazing young adults.

Lewis and Clark is amazing. As a parent of one graduate and another still attending I’m in awe of how much these children grow and learn. The skills and knowledge taught surpasses anything they would learn in a traditional school. It has been a joy to see the confidence gained as the children learn to navigate their world and find joy in the things they can do themselves.

I feel very honored to be part of Lewis and Clark Montessori Charter School. It Is not just a work place for me, it is also my second home. Everyone is warm and welcoming all the time. The Montessori education is the best in the area with great teachers, administration and curriculum.

I have had the honor to be employed at Lewis & Clark Montessori School for over seven years, holding a variety of positions in office management, head guide in primary class rooms and directing after school programs. In all of the roles I have witnessed the school "walk it's talk" as dedicated administrators and staff members focus on the development of each and every child holistically (3 years old through to 8th grade). The school and staff provide a safe and caring environment; offer special elective programs, exciting sports and after-school programming; farming and serving opportunities.
In addition, the school offers a fabulous, nutritious meal program for the enjoyment of our school community . The school is a vibrant member of the surrounding local communities; providing produce to seniors and has future plans in place for more outreach programs in addition to hosting events like the Annual Art Walk for community members to enjoy! There is so much to give kudos to! In closing, I am so thankful that my two grandsons attend here and are receiving the benefits of holistic development and gaining a love for lifetime learning!

I moved out to Oregon after completing my Montessori training, and was fortunate enough to get a job at LCMCS. I could not ask for a better school, nor community, to work for. Everyone has always been welcoming and helpful in every way they can be. Regardless of if you're on staff, a family enrolled in the school, a volunteer, or even one of the many community members in the Damascus area that work with us - everyone feels like one big team, working towards the same goal.

The school ranges from Primary/Kindergarten and goes all the way through Middle School; with each level excelling in their fields. I have seen many classrooms during my training and it is always a comfort to see ones running well. But the classrooms aren't the only part of this school. Electives and after school clubs blend into the curriculum in a way that helps meet the goal of Cosmic Education, while never taking away from the feeling of unity.

If there's ever anything you would want to know about the school, there's always someone around to greet you with a smile and - unless it's a busy transition time - answer your questions. I could not recommend this place more; be you an adult looking to work here, or a parent wanting a great school for your child.

It is rare to find organizations that pull out all the stops to bring reality to their dreams. I believe wholeheartedly in the dreams this school has, as well as their methods and plans. They are creating a reality I want to be a part of.

My grandchildren have attended LCMCS for several years. The staff has been very understanding and flexible in accommodating for their unique learning needs. Academic expectations are high and social emotional skills are not ignored. The added experiences of class camping trips, electives, after school activities and community service add to the development of the whole child.

My grandson attends Lewis & Clark Montessori. This is the happiest I have seen him with regard to going to school. He talks all weekend about how excited he is to return on Monday. Every interaction I have had with the teachers and other staff have always been so positive and helpful. I highly recommend that you send your children to this school!

Love this place! Kind, caring staff who aim to teach the whole child not just to achieve high test scores. The middle school program is unique and engaging. Adolescents are treated like contributing members of the community.

We were drawn to Lewis & Clark Montessori because it was different and we knew that our daughter would be able to get the one-on-one time with her Guides and that its long-term plan was to be K-8.

One of the giddiest days of my life was March of 2011 when I received a call from Lewis & Clark Montessori that our child was selected in the first Lottery Draw for the following school year.

Our child is now a 6th year in Upper Elementary, can navigate so many more things than we were able to do at her age and be a strong, but quiet, Leader among her peers and those younger. She absolutely loves it, is super excited about MAC ("Jr. High") which she will start next year and will be more than ready for the big pond in the Autumn of 2020 when she starts High School.

Lewis and Clark Montessori offers an exceptional educational model. Following the methods and theories of Maria Montessori, and making them work in a modern classroom.

I would have to disagree greatly with any comments regarding this school as less than superior. My child has been involved in a Montessori program since 18 months. These have all been highly-rated, AMI recognized private schools. Total, I have paid over $75k in tuition. Lewis and Clark is equal if not better than any of these.

In terms of fees, there is a small (less than $260) fee that is paid annually as a "resource fee" - families are not required to pay any additional monies or purchase long lists of supplies to begin the year. While I realize that not all families have the same household income, I am also personally aware that the staff are more than willing to work with any and all to accommodate payment, even if it's just $10 a month. Each of the teachers are highly educated and most have master's degrees.

The administrative staff is wonderful and very small in comparison for a school of almost 400 children and 40 staff. Prior to enrolling my child, I too was informed of a single year where a combination of issues, resulted in a deficit. This single incident has never been repeated and all prior and past years the school has worked with a completely balanced budget.

If you have the desire to expose your child to a true Montessori education at basically no cost - this will be an incredible experience for them to grow in a wonderful, supportive environment.

Really disappointed in the education that my grandchildren received at this school. This is not a good option for gifted and talented children, as they just get lost in the large class sizes and the teachers are not always qualified. My grandkids are finally being challenged at a new school. Many kids are allowed to misbehave and bully and yet the school seems to spend more time trying to teach parents how to follow liberal causes, than on the basic discipline and order within its classrooms, which is a Montessori no-no. I also think that Lewis & Clark fails to accommodate children with special needs and many end up leaving. The school has faced many financial crises and my family got tired of being asked for money. Perhaps the school needs to spend less money on its exaggerated administration staff for a school of similar size and more on it's classroom staffing.

I have had many opportunities to grow both professionally and personally as a staff member at LCMCS. The school not only provides a loving, safe place for students and families but also has a welcoming, tight-knit community of teachers and staff members. LCMCS has been a great non-profit organization to work for!

As a mother, there are few things more important to me than the quality of my child's education and knowing that he is cared for and nurtured while he is at school and in someone's care other than my own. When I say "education," I mean more than academics (although academics are certainly important). I want an environment that nurtures the whole child and helps to shape children who are kind, respectful, self-reliant, and community-oriented citizens of the world. I want to know that when my son goes to school in the morning, he is looking forward to the day ahead, not dreading it, and that when he comes home, he will enjoy telling me all about the book he read that day or the seed he planted or his after-school yoga class... LCMCS inspires all of these qualities in children and so much more. I feel incredibly blessed that my son is able to attend such a wonderful school, run by extraordinary staff and teachers who genuinely care about the whole-person development of each individual student.

The best part of this school is how caring and warm the staff are and therefore the children are warm and caring. My children thrive in this school and we are impressed with it everyday and grateful to have the opportunity to be a part of this community.

Lewis and Clark Montessori is the most impressive school I've had any experience with. Some of the things that stand out to me are: They use the real Montessori Method. They teach not only good education but how to be good citizens. The children there are so polite! The lunches are locally sourced and very nutritious--I have very high standards and I can feel good about what my child eats there. They have programs that serve the community. They have meaningful fields trips. There is a great sense of community in the school.

I have two children who are current and past students of LCMCS. My daughter is a freshman in high school this year and I feel like the school has more than prepared her academically and socially for this transition to public high school.
My other daughter has been attending LCMCS since preschool and is currently in 4th grade. We love how her learning experience has been tailored to her specific strengths and weaknesses. We love the staff and feel like they are family.

My grandchildren attend Lewis & Clark, and I can't imagine a more worthy organization for anyone's donation to education. The staff clearly love their work - and big work it is! - and the whole school hums with the joy of learning and being together. This is how a learning community should function, and, as a retired professional educator, I have rarely seen this level of care and attention to the important things in life. I actually love giving to their annual fund because I can see how well utilized all donations are.

Lewis and Clark provides an authentic Montessori experience in Damascus, Oregon. Both of my children have attended since Kindergarten. They have both benefited greatly from being in a Montessori environment. I am very thankful this public option is available for my children.

My daughter started at Children's House after being st another montessori preschool. She has thrived at LCMCS. The staff is fabulous, the program is fabulous, the community is fabulous, and most of all my daughter is loving it!

My family has been at Lewis and Clark Montessori Chater for 5 school years. I am proud to say I have three children going here and have one child waiting to start next year. We drive 15 miles to and from the school daily because we cannot imagine our children at any other school. The dedication and heart of the staff is impressive. I send three pieces of my heart to school everyday knowing that their teachers and the staff value them as much as I do. I feel the teachers go beyond teaching my child the basics, they teach them how to be good citizens and model empathy as they solve problems. The whole child is loved and taught on a daily basis, it's quite impressive. To top it off they serve healthy lunches! I couldn't ask for a better place for my children to grow and learn!

Lewis & Clark Montessori Charter School continues to amaze me each year with their dedication, creativity, and passion for bringing such an enriching, heartfelt program to students. With receiving only 2/3 of the standard allotment of state and federal dollars, they stretch every penny as far as it can go. The programs and exceptional staff inspire many families to drive upwards of 30 miles from out of district to provide the best public education available. LCMCS is an active participant in the local community as well modeling civic duty to all students, supporting seniors and the elderly through community outreach and the farmer's market. The parent community is also a thriving group of dedicated volunteers that supports student activities and fundraisers. Investing in this school continues to be an honor and a privilege.

This is the fourth year at Lewis & Clark for my four children and they are all thriving. The practice of the Montessori method at this school is done with excellence. The staff are highly trained and there is a real sense that they enjoy both their teaching careers and working with each other. The school community is warm and inviting. There are many extra curricular programs offered, including some sports teams - something one rarely sees in charter schools. The lunch program is mostly organic, locally sourced ingredients and delicious, my kids really love it. I just can't say enough about how lucky we feel that we discovered this gem of a school and that we can stay all the way through the 8th grade!

Having an opportunity for a charter Montessori is tremendous! This school is outstanding in its methods and and its character.

As a grandparent of two children at LCMCS I have observed the growth of the school from a few classrooms in 2008 to a full spectrum for pre-school to middle school now in 2015. As a non-profit that functions with lower per child funding, the school with strong administration has weathered the storms of growth with insufficient funding and facility challenges with the support of the school community, fundraising and community support. LCMCS has become a leader in service to the communities that the school serves. The "Helping Hands " project of bringing fresh produce to seniors from the gleanings of the school/student grown garden and local farm donations is just the start!

As a staff member and parent to a child at LCMCS, I can rave for days about this incredible school that we are blessed to be part of. From the amazing working relationships that we, as a staff, share to the community connections of farming, feeding seniors with food insecurity, to managing the local farmer's market to our fresh, local and delicious food service program, LCMCS is a shining example of what a true community can do when given the opportunity and led by a visionary and committed administration.

We tried other charter schools they didn’t fit the our children. After searching for other charter schools we found LCMCS. So we took a leap of faith and hoped for the best. When we picked up our from the first day of school, we asked how was your day, she said “Thank you, I don't ever what to leave I did real work today .” When she said that we knew we found the right place. LCMCS offers many learning opportunities such as Spanish, music, orchestra Choir the list goes on. The adolescent class maintains a full garden then delivers the fresh vegetables to residents in the area with a food instability. The school does wonder full things with only receiving only 58% of the funding per student compared to the public schools. The school lunches are made fresh daily form the schools in house kitchen, using produce grown from the school garden in the salad bar. It’s wonderful to be a part of such a great school and it’s community.

I am constantly in awe of the dedication and care shown by by the teaching staff of this Montessori school. They give so much of themselves to better the world by improving the lives of children. I give because I want them to be able to continue doing such amazing things.

This is my child's second year at The Lewis and Clark Montessori Charter School and the growth, both personal and educational in him is simply remarkable! He is not only able to perform large division problems, in 1st grade!, but he is also recieving Spanish, music, art and learning how to be a compassionate world citizen. I couldn't ask for much more and certainly couldn't find it in the woefully bleak regular school offerings, right now.

I love the fact that this school, as a public charter, has a super diverse population. It represents our varied area and gives our children what they need and it gives me hope!

Community connections is what we like about this organization. Lewis & Clark Montessori Charter School goes far beyond the standard education mission to connect to the large urban/rural community it serves. Community arts events, a unique, locally sourced lunch program, student-based gardening, an outreach project to deliver food to elders in need, and sponsorship of the local, weekly farmers market are some of their projects. Its about kids, its about community - well worth supporting.

My habit is to give generously to the organizations I believe in - both the mission and how the organization carries out its mission. LCMCS does what is says it will do and does it very well. The administration works wonders with the sadly low funding it gets from the state education monies, and makes the most of the fundraising/donor dollars it works hard to gain. The school manages funds responsibly. Not only does the school do a great job of educating its students, but implements important service projects in the wider community. LCMCS has my loyalty as a donor.

LCMCS deserves a 5-star review as a great non-profit because not only does it function as a stellar educational option for Pre-K through 8, it also serves its community and beyond. It is very remarkable that students are able to receive high quality Montessori education at no cost!! This caliber of education is typically unavailable to families that cannot afford the cost of private school tuition. LCMCS offers its students an environment to succeed as individuals, and tools for success interpersonally as well. The school culture promotes finding peace within the individual and tools for creating and understanding of peace between persons and world. LCMCS has its very own organic farm, ran by students! Students learn the importance , knowledge and skills to promote sustainability within our environment to carryon into their careers and communities. Furthermore, produce harvested from our farm is donated to seniors with needs in our community! LCMCS offers several information and enrichment opportunities not only for our students but also open to the community- all are welcome. We possess a strong volunteer base among families. Lewis and Clark Montessori Charter School is a shining star in the local community and in the realm of Oregon charter schools. Researching other non-profit Montessori schools in the area, this is the only school that uniquely offers high quality public Montessori education ranging from pre-K through 8th grade, with an organic farm to school lunch program, foreign language, music, bus transportation, athletics and diverse enrichment programs for its students. It also boasts a high level of community activism such as delivering weekly baskets of fresh produce to needy seniors in the community, offering enrichment classes to seniors, managing the local farmer's market and connecting the adolescent grades to local community through farming practices. This school is remarkable for any one of those reasons, let alone all of them. On top of that, the school (like many other charter schools in Oregon) only receives about 58% of the money per student compared to other public schools. An actively involved parent community, highly dedicated staff and a solid standing in the greater community keep this school moving forward despite the financial burdens.
