Mission: The sierra club is the oldest and largest grassroots environmental organization on the planet. Its mission remains: to explore, enjoy, and protect the wild places of the earth; to practice and promote the responsible use of the earth's ecosystems and resources; to educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment; and to use all lawful means to carry out these objectives. But todays sierra club is not your parents sierra club. Faced with the most important environmental and public health imperative of our timeto end our addiction to dirty fossil fuels and power america with clean energythe club is the grassroots army of a new environmental movement. We are leading efforts to build a domestic and global movement with the scope and power to confront the carbon industry head-on. When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe, said sierra club founder john muir in my first summer in the sie

Until fairly recently, I was a loyal Sierra Club member since 1974. Then the club rebranded as a progressive organization, began straying into social issues (race, gender, etc) and getting very partisan. I am a very strong environmentalist, but I don't want my Sierra Club dues spent on social issues and other distractions. I wrote the Exec Director and raised concerns, but never got a response. I wrote the Board of Directors and got one sympathetic response, and also a neutral response from the President. But the club kept veering left and getting deeper and deeper into social issues. I began to get official club mailings ranting against "white privilege," "colonialism" and "patriarchy." Finally, I had enough, and regretfully dropped my membership. I continue to be a full tilt environmentalist, but no longer a Sierran.

I have supported Sierra in the past, and this is not to say that I won’t continue to do so. However, in reading the reviews I have two thoughts. First. I agree with the writer about the nickels. Additionally, I get additional requests for donations also containing nickels - so I am getting more of the nickels than one per person. And no sooner than I send in a donation, I get another request for a donation. I generally send donations to any groups once a year, and I do not like getting so many multiple requests a year or guilted into giving by sending or offering gifts. Secondly, it bothers me that almost all the reviews were submitted by volunteers as opposed to donors or members of the general public. I believe Sierra does good work in conservation, but I didn’t see a pie chart as to how funds are spent by percentage of dollars.

The Sierra Club is an extremely radical group. For example they are trying to totally destroy the coal industry and using very unethical methods in the campaign. They scare parents by claiming that emissions from coal plants will damage their kids brains. They are totally hysterical on the subject of global warming but their understanding of the science is sadly lacking. They are basically elite people who care far more about the welfare of birds and insects than they care about the welfare of people. Don't believe anything coming from this group.
