The EDRC was a resource for me as a teenager and I'm so happy to see it continue to thrive as a Bay Area non-profit. They organize and provide thoughtful and necessary resources to our community. They have a fantastic leadership team and are well-run.

Excellent leadership and a cause that needs increasing attention. Eating disorders are serious and people experiencing them should receive appropriate treatment. Stigma often keeps people away from receiving care for these disorders. Education and support are effective ways to combat stigma and encourage people to seek the care they need. This organization is small, strong, and makes a valuable contribution to our community.

In partnership with Janice Bremis and Natalie Rangel from EDRC, 2017's first NAMI Santa Clara County General Meeting featured a presentation that was particularly relevant to the work of the Eating Disorders Resource Center. Dr. Linsey Utzinger, a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Stanford University School of Medicine spoke to us about her work specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of children, adolescents, and young adults with eating disorders. Dr. Utzinger's talk covered disorders that commonly co-occur with anxiety disorders, including eating disorders.

Dr. Utzinger, with 10 years experience in her field, led us through such possible variables as genetics, environment, and life experiences, how to determine a diagnosis of anxiety disorder, OCD, eating disorders based on the latest DSM 5, and most importantly, the need for both a psychiatric and a medical assessment in order to get appropriate help for one's self or a family member along with what signs to look for. Dr. Utzinger also listed Cognitive Behavior Therapy and other therapies that are an important part of a treatment plan along with possible medication.

Dr. Utzinger's talk was informative and also straightforward in addressing the close links between anxiety disorders and eating disorders as well as the dangers of untreated eating disorders. As anxiety and eating disorders enter more and more into our conversations about mental illness, I am very glad I had an opportunity to attend this talk. And many thanks to Janice and Natalie at EDRC for partnering with NAMI in this and other activities.
