Causes: Adult Education, Education
Mission: To unleash the power of literacy to improve lives. Through a wide range of literacy services, including reading, writing, math, life, technology and work skills, CFL helps a diverse population of learners meet their needs and achieve their personal and employment-related goals.
Results: From 2011 - 2012, CFL served 2,074 individuals throughout 30 instructional sites. 192 volunteer tutors provided 11,142 hours of instruction valued at a total of $242,784. 62 % of students were female; 70% of students were unemployed; and 85 percent of students reported being low income or on public assistance programs.

Programs: Adult basic education (ABE): Center for Literacy’s (CFL) community classes improve the literacy skills of our learners and serve as a pipeline into our GED prep program. Classes are designed to improve learners' reading, writing, language, math, and/or technology skills. Lessons may be delivered individually, in small groups, or as a whole class, and address goal-specific objectives that are defined during the orientation process. GED prep: Classes prepare GED candidates to take and pass each of the five subject areas of the GED test: Language Arts Writing, Language Arts Reading, Math, Social Studies, and Science. English as a second language (ESL/EL CIVICS): CFL holds English as a second language (ESL) classes throughout Philadelphia. We have beginning, intermediate, and advanced classes that progressively address the basics of the English language and the concept of civic responsibility. Many of our ESL learners apply for citizenship, and our classes support their application. Tutoring program: CFL began as a volunteer tutoring program in 1968, and this service remains a core activity today. When matched with a tutor, learners will meet for small group or one-on-one sessions to achieve educational goals. Tutors are trained and supported by our team of professional instructors.
