Mission: The mission of Aim High is to inspire a life-long love of learning and to instill a sense of community, opportunity, and respect so that students are prepared for success in school and in life. Aim High changes the lives of under-resourced middle school students through an enriching, and academic summer experience that leads to success in high school and beyond. We intervene at a critical stage in students' lives with a free, multi-year summer program. Empowering youth in a supportive classroom environment transforms their attitudes toward learning and unleashes their potential. Our 15 campuses are located in Northern California, where we serve 1,700 students and employ 400 teachers. Our educators reflect the neighborhoods where our students live, and many alumni are inspired to return and work for Aim High. Aim High’s incubator role for innovative teaching techniques inspires new generations of teachers and provides access to real job training and job development. Aim High also provides summer employment opportunities and career development for teachers and teens, many of whom are Aim High alums.
Results: Through high-quality summer enrichment programs, Aim High has touched the lives of thousands of low-income youth in the Bay Area, and continues to employ a diverse group of teachers - 67% of whom are people of color. Aim High's impact is significant: 99% of students say they have an adult or teacher who cares about them 95% of students can imagine themselves as successful college students 79% of students improved their math skills (based on pre- and post-test scores) 87% of students tell us they were challenged at Aim High 90% of students report they are better prepared for the upcoming school year
Target demographics: Low-income Bay Area middle school youth.
Direct beneficiaries per year: 2014: 1,700 students at 15 campuses
Geographic areas served: San Francisco, Oakland, Redwood City, East Palo Alto, San Rafael, Marin City and Tahoe/Truckee, CA
Programs: Our summer program model aims to close the opportunity and achievement gaps for low-income middle school students by offering an engaging, supportive, and tuition-free summer learning program. The Aim High experience fosters critical thinking, instills academic habits, and cultivates a love of learning. Students participate in four rigorous academic classes in the mornings: Math, Science, Humanities and Issues & Choices. Aim High classes have a low student to teacher ratio, allowing for individual attention and a focus on project-based learning. In total, students receive over 60 hours of academic instruction over the course of the five-week program. In the afternoon, students participate in activities such as art, drama, and sports. Students typically participate for three or four summers, and many return to teach in the program. Aim High continually evaluates feedback, assesses results, and shares best practices in order to deliver a high-quality program.

Great organization..my daughter attended this summer program and has benefited in so many ways. Come fall she was ready and willing to take on an important role in her own education

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

When my daughter attended SFSU campus

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Ways to make it better...

Due to monetary restraints SFSU was closed this pass summer which is sad because a large campus can be overwhelming for a fresh man college student but if they learn thier way around when younger thier confidence will be more intune with thier education

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

One thing I'd also say is that...

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

My son attended Aim High the past two summer and absolutely loved it. Now that is a miracle statement coming from my son! He hates summer school because "it just does not make sense to go to school during the summer"! During Aim High he jumped out of bed to get there early and came home excited to talk about what they did and the friends he made. He can not wait for next summer and has already mention going back as a volunteer when he is old enough! Thank you Aim High for showing my son that learning can be fun!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the positive reaction my son had attending Aim High.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

serve more children of low income families and open more campuses.

I was astounded, thoroughly impressed and extremely fortunate to have learned about this phenomenal summer program. It provided my son with an enriching academic experience and sports activities. A parent could not ask for more in a summer program.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

very aware of current events and its impact on youth. The day after Michael Jackson's death, all classes watched televised news coverage. The impact of his early demise on youth was properly acknowledged, recognized.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

...extend its academic programs with other arts and life-development training courses (etiquette, ethics, debate, etc.)

My experience as a single mother of two children has been very supportive. My oldest son is the one who was accepted to participate in this program for the following two years. Last summer was the first time we were part of Aim High. I said WE because we attended as a family the orientation, and we have been involved in the program, bringing our country food in a cultural event, and been welcome very warmly since the begining for the teachers and staff. After the program was over I can basically observed and feel my son more assertive and entusiastic about school, and himself. Thank you Aim High for having us be part of the program, and ernriching my son's academic and social life.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the learning process of my son.

AIM High walks the talk relative to educational equity! Our son was lucky enough to get into their summer program and it has made a significant difference in his beginning school year achievement. This program is truly a gem and worthy of much public support.

This program provides everyone with a chance to learn and have fun at the same time! For those who don't like to work out of a book or worksheets, it perfect. We mostly learn from activities. Also every Friday, we explore our neighborhood and learn our cultures. Plus we get ready for our futures and we learn to take the right path. Aim High gave me the best summer ever and I could never forget it even if i wanted to. The trips to the exploratorium was unforgettable. I smile just thinking about it!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my subjects in regular school. I was getting everything my teachers were saying because i recognized the lesson from Aim High. I knew all the answers to the questions which improved my grades.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

no changes

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

that all the teachers are amazing, everyone is so nice, no violence, and I feel extremely safe there. Also the learning is so fun.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

like your best friends. Even your best friends at school couldn't get compared to them. The make you laugh, help you, and they just cheer your day up in a instant.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

extend the length of the program. When Aim High ended I was torn apart. I was sad it's ending. I wanted it to be my regular school.

Ways to make it better...

no change

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

no change

One thing I'd also say is that...

Aim High gave me the best summers I'll ever have.

I had a great time at AIM High. It was fun when we went to the Botanical Gardens, and got to observe different plants/trees, afterwards we got Jamba Juice. In Science we learned "The Bone Song", which we had to say the names of the bones in our body and do a specific dance move along with saying the name. In Humanities we did a collaborative poster about modified versions of Greek Mythology. I also liked Jeopardy which takes place every Friday. Everyone got a little too competitive but we all had a great time trying to earn points. AIM HIGH IS AWESOME!!

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

last longer, like extend the last day of aim high to the next month.
