A World Aware Inc. teaches business classes to the truly poor of the world. After just the first of a series of these classes, students have had the knowledge and confidence to step out and start their own business, apply for positions they were not comfortable with prior to the class, and exhibited traits that all employers seek in the job market. The down to the earth presentations give confidence as well as information to the students. The program requires participation in a volunteer effort to practice their newly learned skills, thus propelling them into the job market with great success.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Several locations in South Africa, as well as North America and the UK.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

expand this particular project to other places in the world. Currently plans are in development to extend this to Colorado on a permanent basis.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

No nonsense. Don't give handouts, expect results, and teach recipients to give back.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Well educated, professional, and caring people. Not talking about making a difference, but actually doing something that makes a difference.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Put a footprint with their model on every continent. More funding would provide the ability to better advertise the concept and deliver a model to every corner of the world with the structure to perpetuate the model.

Ways to make it better...

AWA had more funding to expand the project.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Logistical support for the anticipated extent of their operations world wide.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Operations of AWA are tied directly to the community so even after the sessions end, there is always someone to continue support of the students. This guidance is truly a gift as the students know they have a system to build on and will not be abandoned.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every week

Teaching excellent skills, but also to teach the students to give their knowledge to others freely is tryly the way things should be done. This is what makes AWA a vibrant and successful organization. They cover job skills in the trades from plumbing, carpentry, electrical, etc. but also business ownership, or how to be a really great employee. The support systems after the training is exceptional too. Requiring students to participate in a hands on project that gives back to the community sets a great standard and brings benefit to many. Keep it up AWA!
