ALSTDI has profoundly impacted my life and the lives of several friends who are also patients. I first visited ALSTDI on the one-year anniversary of my dad's passing from ALS. Until then, I thought supporting ALS meant participating in the annual ALS walk and hoping for the best. However, meeting their team changed everything for me.<br><br>Carol, who has become a lifelong friend and mentor, spoke passionately about the patients she loves and the donors she helps. The research team was incredibly kind, patiently answering my questions despite my limited biology background, and sharing their optimism about their research.<br><br>ALSTDI's commitment to cutting-edge technology is best demonstrated through their ARC program. They have compiled more data than any other ALS organization, creating a large database that is searchable thanks to partnerships with various companies. This essential, yet often overlooked, work accelerates research and highlights why I admire ALSTDI so much. They are not driven by headlines but by a singular mission: to cure ALS and make it a treatable, if not curable, disease.<br><br>I have countless stories of how ALSTDI has helped people I care about, but one recent example stands out. A few months ago, a friend's grandmother was diagnosed with ALS at an excruciatingly late stage, having been misdiagnosed for years. The family didn't have time to arrange for a text-to-speech device or other aids to make her last days more comfortable. In a panic, I called Glynis, an amazing team member, who connected me with Michele. Michele helped the family set up a communication device so the grandmother could say her goodbyes.<br><br>ALSTDI excels not only in ALS research but also in passion and compassion. I can think of no finer nonprofit with which I've had the pleasure of supporting.

Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown, MA, is not just a place steeped in history, as this is where Helen Keller's teacher Ann Sullivan taught and Helen herself visited many times. It is not just a special school for "blind" kids. It is a place that teaches and nurtures all that come in contact with its community. Whether it is a visually impaired elderly person home bound that has audio books on tape delivered to his/her door or a child with multiple disabilities that learns to walk, talk, read, write, explore the community, get a job, enjoy sports and clubs and grow to become a productive, happy, healthy adult or a young parent with a newborn baby who has just learned his/her child is blind who comes seeking knowledge and finds loving, caring support and hope for a bright future, Perkins is a place of friends, community and inspiration. <br /><br />I can attest for these things personally as I am a visually impaired adult who has used the Perkins library to supply me with hours of reading through large print and audio books. My visually impaired, autistic son has been attending the Perkins School for the Blind since he was 3, and even before that he received outreach services as an infant from Perkins. After just learning of my son's diagnoses, Perkins provided a wonderful teacher of the visually impaired to come work with my son at our home when he was only 18 months old. This teacher also had a multi disabled child and her and I quickly became friends and she is still 16 years later a great source of knowledge and support for me. My son has now paraded through all the programs at the school from preschool to secondary (high school). He has accomplished so very much over the years. He has gone from a 3-year-old who was not toilet trained and eating no solid food to a 16-year-old who will eat most anything you put in front of him with gusto, is toilet trained, has 2 jobs (one off and one on campus), is on the school swim team, wrestling team and in the spring the track team. He travels independently around campus. My husband and I have learned from, shared with and become life-long friends with fellow parents and staff at Perkins. It will be a bittersweet day for all of us when our son graduates from this place, but I know Perkins will always be part of our world in some way forever. <br /><br />Over the years, we have personally donated dollars, as well as my husband's accounting practice, we know are well spent and help to improve the life's of many people. We donate our time and expertise to help organize and make school social events a success for staff, parents, and students. This is an organization you can confidently support in so many ways knowing without a doubt that you are helping many truly special children and families.

I would be very careful donating time or money to this "non-profit". I worked for the CEO and Director for about a month as a certified Quickbooks Online bookkeeper. During that time I found many questionable accounting functions that were not exactly kosher, according to non-profit accounting principles. In addition, I was refused any pay after working diligently to bring their books that were two and one-half years behind. I filed a small claims case, which was avoided for the better part of a year. As a senior case writer and researcher at Harvard’s Global Health Delivery Project, I have had the opportunity to study the strategy and effectiveness of numerous programs operating in resource limited settings around the world. Last year, my work enabled me to get to know Pathfinder International intimately, as I and my team developed a case study of Mukta, one of Pathfinder’s HIV prevention programs in India. Throughout my experience researching the program and working with Pathfinder’s staff there, I came to appreciate the strength of Pathfinder’s human rights framework and its implications for their work on the ground. Mukta works with marginalized female sex workers and men who have sex with men, key populations whose vulnerability to HIV is exacerbated by structural and social factors that create formidable barriers not only to their ability to access HIV prevention and treatment services, but to their day-to-day safety. Pathfinder’s staff united excellent management practices with their human rights framework to build the capacity not only of the local NGOs they deliver services through, but of the communities themselves to set agendas, develop strategies to effect the change they deem most necessary and, ultimately, improve health outcomes. I was consistently impressed by Pathfinder’s commitment to excellence in management and data use practices, as well as their focus on sustainable change both for communities and for the governments who represent them.

Jessica Locke and The Fire Fighters Fund has helped the Newton Fire Department in so many ways. Jessica has gone from station to station and documented the problems and needs of each of the members. She has written letters, held signs along with firefighters at various protests and pressured city officials to replace outdated, unsafe equipment and apparatus. She even went as far as creating a video to document and dispute the findings of city officials as to the cause of a serious accident involving a 24 year old fire engine the city still had in service. She has been a true advocate for members of our department. <br> <br>As for the Alexander Technique, I can't say enough about it. After suffering headaches daily for 20 years, Jessica's work has reduced that to an occasional one here and there. It definitely made a difference.

I reached out to the Alzheimer's Association after my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. The clinical staff is incredibly caring, compassionate and knowledgeable and helped us navigate the system and effectively manage my mom's illness. By participating in a caregiver's support group and attending educational programs, I learned so much and never felt alone. I am so grateful. I am proud to be a supporter of this outstanding organization. I participate in the Memory Walk every year.
