Our son Michael/Mickey/Mike III, has been a regular every summer (exception for covid one year) for many years. He is intelligent but autistic which often leads to behavioral issues. The staff at Badger is always wonderful and there are at least a few that have been there every year since he has been attending. The staff knows him and his strengths and weaknesses and they have dealt with every issue that has arisen.
Several years ago, we were looking for a "sleep away" camp for him close to Chicago where we live. As we started our search to late in the season, all the camps were filled. However, one kind lady at one of the camps suggested we look into Wisconsin Badger Camp. After talking to them on the phone and even though it was a bit of a drive for us, we went there and have never regretted doing so and have never looked elsewhere. Upon arrival at camp for check-in, we were immediately impressed with the grounds and accommodations which includes a swimming pool prepared for almost any form of assistance a camper might need. Mike is a strong swimmer and he looks forward to swimming every day. Each camper and parent/guardian is interviewed by medical and nutritional staff who cover every aspect of health care and dietary needs. Mike has a severe peanut allergy and they note this on his diet and assure that epi-pens are with him at all times as well as immediately available. Trained staff are present at all times to administer regular medications and to handle emergencies should any arise. We are always impressed with the quality of the year-round staff and the volunteers and temporaries that regularly are integral parts of the Badger team annually. To us, a lot is said by the people who are there tending to our son and all the campers.
Mike begins preparation for next year's camp as soon as the current year is done. He picks out clothes, get, a new watch, personal hygiene needs and whatever else he deems necessary. He so looks forward to seeing people he knows and has come to love. He has availed himself of all the activities offered including camping, fishing, arts and crafts, hiking, swimming and no matter the weather he is happy doing something with his counselors. He has honed some skills and picked up new ones and is proud of himself for what he has done.
We feel Mike is always in a safe, secure and caring environment and confident that he is well taken care of for the time that he is there. He will be going to Badger forever. A wonderful place for those in need. They go above and beyond in so many ways including financial aid to help as many people as they can. Again, we have never looked for a camp since finding Badger and we can't say enough in praise of the camp and the people who are there for the campers.
This Camp for Me when I went in 2022 was terrible. The food and pool was amazing to eat and swim in the beds sucked so much noise at lights out they take non permitted items and don't give them back at the end the staff cabin has modern A/C and has better heating and comfier beds. NEVER COMING BACK
Our son has autism. Last summer he spent his first time away from his parents in his 13 years. We had never visited Badger but heard from many people in the field as well as others about Wisconsin Badger Camp and decided to try it for him. From our first contact with Badger personnel we were impressed and confident that he would be happy there. As we often repeat, Wisconsin Badger Camp sounded too good to be true yet it is all true. The pre-camp instructions and forms covered everything from issues to diet to medications and then some. The staffing of the camp and the one on one offered was well beyond most places for special needs kids. When he was dropped off we felt confident that he would be safe and enjoy himself. He certainly did and he accomplished more than we could have hoped for. The follow-up was superb and gave us a day by day journal as well as ideas to build on for him. We also got a daily phone call just to let us know how he was doing. For those in need, there is no charge which is wonderful. We will be back this year and hopefully for many more years.
