I have been supporting Mylestone since 1995. I am a proud long-time sponsor of many horses over the years. My favorite horse is Shadow and he was rescued in 2005. These are wonderful people, the folks that care for the rescue horses. The horses flourish under their aid.

I have been volunteering at Mylestone for about 20 years and enjoy working with the rescue horses. Many of the horses have been neglected and abused. It usually takes some time for them to trust humans again but many do. Many come in looking like skeletons and are timid around humans. Here they are brought back slowly to learn that they will be fed regularly along with regular farrier care, dental care and vet care. These horses hit the lottery when they are taken in by Mylestone. The people running this rescue work as hard as any individuals I have ever met.

I started volunteering at MER after I retired. I didn't grow up around horses but the Thompson's were very patient and very willing to teach a novice. I have now been volunteering for over 15 years. It is extremely rewarding to watch a new rescue horse thrive after being treated so poorly before they were rescued.

I have been volunteering with Mylestone for about 10-years. The rescue is my favorite place to be, and share my free time with some of the most amazing creatures who display true resiliency by showing us how to heal. Not only are the rescued horses a huge part of my life, but so are the incredible friendships I’ve built with the other volunteers. Mylestone is a little slice of heaven, that I look forward to dedicating my time to every single week.

I started volunteering with Mylestone almost 8 years ago. I love spending time with the rescued horses - but also the community of volunteers, sponsors, donors and followers of the rescue. One of my favorite parts of volunteering are participating in outreach and events. It’s so important to educate on what we are about - and what we do! I have been an active member appointed to the Board for about 2 years, and thoroughly enjoy working alongside our other Board Members and the administrative end of the rescue. Our horses are beautiful - and just being around them provides instant gratification.

Mylestone is going into it's 26th year of helping horses. Currently there are 30+ rescue horses in our care. We are also helping horse owners and other smaller rescues during the covid 19 crisis through our Equine Relief Fund. So far in 2020 we have been able to help over 100 horses through this effort. We hope to continue to help many more horses with the Equine Relief Fund during these arduous times. You can donate at www.mylestone.org to make a difference today.

There are poorly run rescues and rescues run well. Then, the next level is run well and from the heart. This is the catalog Mylestone occupies. Their outreach brings people in touch with with the horses. This contact creates love, loyalty and a deeper understanding of trauma and recovery. It not only benefits the animals receiving the care, it benefits those offering care in profound ways. This rescue deserves all the accolades I can provide.

Our organization works with Mylestone in our mutual effort to help horses in crisis. Besides caring for the equines at their own rescue facility, they reach out to help many others through our grant-making program. There aren't words to describe what a wonderful experience this has been. Mylestone's director, Susankelly Thompson, truly cares about every equine that is suffering, hungry, or otherwise in need. In every possible case, Mylestone joins in our work to help when needed, whether it's by making a donation or collaborating on another solution. We appreciate Mylestone so much and are honored to call them a true friend in this world of helping equines who need us.

It's hard to find the words to describe how wonderful Mylestone Equine Rescue and the people there are. Mylestone, led by the invincible Susankelly Thompson, gives lifetime sanctuary and care to horses that would absolutely not have survived - much less thrived, without the devotion, love, and quality care that is required for challenged horses to live comfortable, happy lives. And astonishingly, in addition to providing for the horses in their direct care, they help horses all over America in partnership with Fleet of Angels' emergency grant programs. In 2022 alone, Mylestone's participation was instrumental in providing emergency feed or vet care for 595 horses! As far as we are concerned, Mylestone, Susankelly, family, and crew are top-notch in too many ways to mention.

Mylestone Equine Rescue, director Susankelly Thompson, and her deeply caring board do more to help at-risk equines than most people could imagine. From helping local horses that have been abandoned, abused, surrendered, or otherwise put at risk, to helping other rescues in NJ during crises, to helping Fleet of Angels provide critical emergency services and supplies to equines put at risk by natural disasters all over the country, Mylestone's impact is phenomenal! Susankelly has the heart of a lion, and puts an incredible amount of time, energy, and spirit into simply doing good -- wherever and whenever she is needed. Honesty, integrity, diligence, and intelligence are easily found as key ingredients of each of Mylestone's outreach programs. If you are considering making a contribution to a fantastic equine-focused program, I highly recommend that you put Mylestone Equine Rescue at the top of your list.

Mylestone is an exemplary organization that not only helps horses in need, they help other rescues to help them. Their impact on the rescue community is substantial. They not only provide excellent care for their rescued horses, they serve as a shining example to other organizations. of what an ethical, compassionate rescue looks like. The equine rescue community is facing some tough times, and there are plenty of sketchy folks out there making money on homeless animals. It can be a demoralizing place. So I am deeply grateful to Mylestone for reminding us all that there are still good people in the world doing good things. On behalf of everyone you have helped, thank you.

Almost 6 years ago I volunteered for the 1st time at Mylestone & it was 3 degrees below zero. Not once did I ever think about not going back. Now I volunteer twice a week and it is without a doubt my best 8 hours of my week. The horses help me as much as I help them (well they don't give me human treats but that's ok). The owners are wonderful people and absolutely everything they do is in the best interest of the horses (& goat). I'd give them 6 stars if I could :) Thanks for everything Mylestone!

I feel blessed to be able to volunteer at Mylestone. My first day over 3 1/2 years ago, I arrived and it was 3 below zero. It quickly made me realize that no matter what the conditions are, these wonderful horses (& a goat :) ) need to be cared for every day and night. It is wonderfully run, every decision (easy or tough) is made with each horses best interest in mind and it is great to be part of the team. Without a doubt, my best 6-8 hours each week are spent at Mylestone!

Mylestone is an Equine rescue charity Par Excellence! I have been a supporter for decades, visited at least 3 times and am in constant contact with the owners who run the rescue and do have an outstanding total commitment life for these horses they take in plus others. I can't say enough for their dedication and tireless work they do. It's a family endeavor and volunteers are always in demand and needed. If this inspires you please consider donating plus perhaps getting involved in the day-to-day tasks if you live nearby and this is of interest to you. I sponsor several horses and have a particular affection for those who are sight challenged. The Thompson's are truly horse whisperers who love and serve their horses with deep affection and commitment. They are unsurpassed!

I admire the work they do to save unwanted and abused horses, treat them medically, find adoptive homes for them and if that is not possible they provide a loving and peaceful home for them to live out their lives. The family that runs Mylestone is totally dedicated to their mission. They work tirelessly for these horses and especially in the current climate that has seen a decrease in donations and volunteer staff diminished. They continue to work, care and love these animals and deserve all the support of the community and beyond. I salute and endorse them wholeheartedly. Have been a donor for several decades.

As a foster home for one of the horses who was lucky enough to find her way to Mylestone I have experienced firsthand the wonderful work they do.
Each & every animal receives the love & care they need & deserve.
Finances are handled responsibly to insure that the donations & support they receive are used for that which they were intended....the welfare of the horses. They are there 24/7, 365 days a year, doing whatever is needed. But they can't do it alone....the donations & support they receive will allow them to continue to be there for the horses most in need of help, & is truly appreciated.

Their compassion & love for each & every horse finding his or her way to them is heartwarming.
Running a horse rescue is challenging under normal circumstances, & especially so over the past year with all of the pandemic issues, however these good folks continued to do what they do best...providing the very best care of the horses entrusted to them. Many of the horses who come to them have special needs & they do everything possible to insure those needs are met.
They also often offer a helping hand to other rescues, as well as owners, who may have fallen on hard times, whether it be financial assistance for a vet bill or help when euthanasia is the only option, or advice & guidance to a newly formed rescue.
I have worked with several rescues over the past 20 years & Mylestone is without a doubt one of the best!!

Funds from every fundraiser and charity auction, bake sale, or raffle go to their animals and any others they can donate hay or feed to. Without places like Mylestone these beautiful, sweet animals have no where else to go and they need people like SK and Bruce and places like Mylestone. We love these horses and they love us.

We operate an equine rescue, so we have a lot of exposure to other organizations. I know very few rescues as well-run as Mylestone. They are highly professional, compassionate people who maintain a top notch facility. But what really sets them apart is the level of altruism that they show other organizations. We are one of the many they have helped. They have granted us funds to provide badly-needed veterinary care for some of our most challenging patients. For example, when our senior mare, Velvet needed eye surgery, they were quick to offer assistance. Today, this lovely mare enjoys a high quality of life, pain free, thanks to their generosity. It's hard to overstate how caring these folks are. They are truly in a league of their own, and an example of what all equine rescues should strive to be.

I have been working with Mylestone since 2003. The reason I continue to do so is because they genuinely love what they do for horses that have experienced great suffering, and provide everything they need to have the best life possible. Most of their horses come from auction and hoarding or cruelty cases. Most can only be adopted as companions, which is a tough sell in any economic time, but especially in recent years. Almost all of these horses will live out their lives at Mylestone, happy, cared for by loving people, and wanting for nothing.

About two years ago, my husband and I started volunteering at Mylestone along with our daughter.
As you make your way to Mylestone, you see beautiful open fields with the horses grazing, running or just lying about. As we enter into the barn you see all the names of the horses on their stalls and if some are in we greet them. Most are out waiting eagerly to be brought in to have their dinner.

Bruce and SusanKelly always keep us informed on any changes to their diet or who has seen a vet. It's a rewarding place to help out with the horses and to see them happy and healthy.

We consider these horses to be very fortunate to have such a place to live out their lives.

This sanctuary for horses is the best. Susankelly and Bruce Thompson are the owners and you will never find more dedicated people taking care of the horses. With approximately 40 horses on the farm, each horse gets everything they need, from proper veterinary care to a hay and grain diet tailored to each horse's needs. These horses come from all walks of life - hoarding situations, auctions, cruelty cases, slaughter pens, former lesson horses who can no longer earn their keep. Many are old and many have special medical needs. Susankelly also works tirelessly behind the scenes helping to place unwanted horses into suitable new forever homes. They also have a fund to help other horse rescues and individuals who want to keep their horses but have fallen on hard economic times.

Each horse (and one goat) has plenty of room to roam (or gallop), a shelter from the elements, and clean water and food delivered to them several times a day. If a medical issue (or suspected issue) arises, it is dealt with promptly as the horse's comfort and health is of the upmost importance. The horses at Mylestone are treated like individuals and their health needs and personality need are addressed case by case. It’s a really great place and I’m proud to be a supporter.

I got involved with Mylestone on the periphery because I'm a friend of a board member. I've been to their open houses and have helped out at a couple of events. I'm very impressed by the way the horses are cared for by the staff and volunteers. Each horse is treated as an individual personality and given special treatment. The dedication, hard work and hours put in are amazing. This clearly is a special organization and I'm proud to be involved in a small way.

A wonderful sanctuary for horses that have had difficult lives. The horses are cared for by knowledgeable staff, medical professionals, farriers, and volunteers who put the welfare the animals in the forefront. Whenever necessary, the horses have a forever home surrounded by equine buddies and caring humans.

I've known Mylestone Equine Rescue for over 10+ years and what is shown in the wonderful video here is just the tip of the iceberg. Susankelly, Bruce and all the volunteers work tirelessly to provide a loving and healthy home for so many unwanted/abused/neglected horses. Unfortunately, many people don't want to or can't care for their horses for the entire life of that horse. Mylestone does everything in it's power to help find horses new homes and/or providing guidance to people in these situations. Sadly, there's only limited funds and space and no rescue can help every single horse, but certainly try their hardest.

Volunteers play such an important role at the rescue and you really don't need much experience to lend a hand as there are many different things you can do to help....AND you are guaranteed to meet a ton of great people, have fun and help so many horses get the love and life they so deserve.

Thanks for everything you do, Mylestone, for our beloved equine friends!

I appreciated the honest advice I received when needing to place my horse. Even though they were unable to take my horse because of a long waiting list the woman I spoke with took the time out to talk to me about other options. She was understanding but frank about the realizations in trying to find a home for my older horse.

Love their annual Open House. My favorite horse is Cleo a beautiful dark bay Thoroughbred mare that was rescued in 1995. Mylestone rescued her as a 4 year old and has cared for her all these years. I don't know many rescue organizations that would care for an animal that was adopted for 22 years and counting.

Thank you for your review, I think you meant to say that Cleo wasn't adopted. She was rescued in 1995 from going to slaughter and they only interest we had in people adopting her was as a broodmare. There are enough unwanted horses, why add more. Cleo has been with us all these years. Thank you again for your kind words.

They are so dedicated to the care of the rescue horses at Mylestone. So many have special needs and the lengths they go to ensure the horses needs are met are exceptional. I like knowing that they provide care long term even if the horses are not adopted into their own homes. I believe it is Cleo that has been in their care for over 20 years.

The stories about the horses touch me deeply. They are given a second chance at Mylestone Equine Rescue and they flourish. I was so surprised to learn that many of the older horses get fed small meals 7-9 times a day. These older horses don't have teeth to be able to properly chew hay. I didn't realize how much work went into caring for the horses. I thoroughly enjoyed my tour.

This is one of the most wonderful equine rescues around. The place is always clean and the horses well taken care of. They also have a program for handicapped children to come and work with the horses, some of which also have handicaps. Money given will actually go to help the horses directly. The family that runs it is also very generous in helping fellow humans. I would give it 10 stars if I could.

I recently visited Mylestone and was very impressed with the rescue. The volunteers were friendly while working cleaning fields and stalls. Susankelly took me for a tour and gave me some history on each of the horses and why they are no longer ridable. She explained that this is one of the reasons that makes it very hard to place them. You could see how the horses adored Susankelly by the way the ran up nickering to greet us. From how the horses were acting it was hard to believe that they were once abused or neglected and no longer ridable. I found my visit very educational.

After my visit I went home and went to Mylestone's Facebook page... I now get regular updates, pictures and events that Mylestone is hosting. I can't wait to go to their Open House in October and meet the newest addition.

We are sorry you feel the need to give us a poor review. Did you contact the NJ SPCA or Dept of Agriculture about the pony in question if it was badly neglected? We don't have legal authority to remove a neglected horse or pony, the NJ SPCA or animal control would have to be called in. We also have 38 horses and ponies currently in our care and we are limited in how many we can help if we are unable to adopt out the companion horses we have currently. Did the owner make an effort to find a home before sending the pony to the auction? Were other rescue groups contacted to see if they have room? Would it have been possible for you to take the pony in and board the pony until a home could be found?

My volunteer experience at Mylestone has been absolutely wonderful. Each horse has a heartwarming story of survival thanks to the kind hearts of Susankelly and Bruce Thompson. Their dedication to the horses is truly admiral because of the constant commitment many of the older horses require. Not only are they devoted to Mylestone, but they are compassionate towards horses and volunteers alike. All the horses are loved and treated with the utmost care, provided by all of the many committed volunteers. The overwhelming amount of love is what makes Mylestone such a special sanctuary for horses who have endured so much in their lifetime.

I would encourage everyone to schedule a visit to Mylestone or attend the annual Open House in October to meet and interact with the horses at the barn. It’s impossible not to fall in love with one of the many ponies who steal your heart instantaneously. Volunteering is also great way to give back to Mylestone while getting to know the horses and ponies on a personal level. Volunteers are truly a priceless and much appreciated gift that helps the horses to live a peaceful and pleasant life. Having horse experience is not required to help heal and care for the gentle animals at Mylestone.

I can personally say that my time spent at Mylestone will be with me forever. Each day spent at the barn was memorable, enjoyable, and made a difference in the horse’s lives.

I've been a volunteer at Mylestone Equine Rescue (MER) since August 2013. I've always loved horses and, now that I work from home 5 days a week, I wanted to ensure I got out of the house and wanted to make a difference in our community.

At MER, I've rekindled my love of horses and I know I'm making a difference in the lives of these beautiful animals. I volunteer one evening a week to serve "dinner" to the horses and have participated in many fundraising activities. I've met so many awesome, dedicated volunteers as well as other horse lovers and concerned folks in the community.

I've never known more dedicated staff and volunteers; the caring and compassion can't be measured. Everything possible is done to rehabilitate the physical and emotional well-being of the horses who come through the stable doors. We invite you to join us in our mission.

Life has not been the same for me during the last six months. In fact, it is so much better now, ever since I started to volunteer at Mylestone. Honestly, I never knew it existed until I was recruited by Cheryl at the Hunterdon Humane Open House last April. I have loved helping on the farm from day one and look forward to returning each week, especially visiting with and talking to all of the horses. While they may not “talk” back in a literal sense, just by looking into their eyes, you know they are happy you are there caring for them.

Bruce and Susankelly Thompson are the most down-to-earth, genuine people one could ever meet and they are so extremely grateful for any support given to the rescue, whether it be helping on the farm or at events, or through donations and sponsorships. It is comforting to know these horses are loved and well-taken care of by the Thompsons as well as by a group of dedicated professionals and volunteers. It is an organization one can go and physically see, knowing their donations are going to a worthy cause.

Mylestone is an impressive, eye-opening operation; one that I strongly urge you to experience if you have not yet done so. Who knows, you too just may want to volunteer and change your life for the better.

I have been a volunteer at Mylestone Equine Rescue for a year following my retirement. Having worked as a social work practitioner, administrator, and educator over the years, I was interested in volunteering with a nonprofit group that serves animals (my second passion!). I read about Mylestone in the newspaper, attended last year's Open House in October 2013, and started volunteering shortly afterwards. Several weeks ago I was helping to recruit new volunteers at Open House 2014!

Mylestone is truly a model nonprofit that goes beyond being an organization. For Susankelly and Bruce, it is a way of life. Running a rescue for 37 abused and neglected horses is no easy feat. The horses (and a goat) receive the best of care from dedicated veterinarians, farriers, equine dentists, and other professionals on a regular basis and as needed for urgent care. In addition to having their immediate needs met 24/7, I can attest to the fact that each horse and the goat are well loved in a safe and clean environment. Susankelly and Bruce are supported in their efforts by family, friends, and a corps of volunteers. It is a joy to see the horses progress at Mylestone where they are respected and appreciated.

Given the horses' histories, the need for extensive medical care as well as different types of feed and bedding is great and very costly. It was validating, and not a surprise to me, that in 2014 Mylestone was selected by the ASPCA as one of five equine rescues nationwide to be awarded $10,000. The gift was well deserved.

I hope to continue volunteering at Mylestone for years to come, helping to care for the horses as well as supporting fundraising efforts.

I have been a sponsor for many years now. MER has been helping horses for 20 years. I have sponsored several horses over the years and the dedication these people have to the horses is just amamzing. Many of these horses are older and require so much care. They feed 4 times a day, which surprsied me. It was explained in one of the sponsor letters that they do a late night feeding around 8pm to check on all the horses. If one of the horses is not well, it is better to get a handle on the problem then having the horse wait until the next morning. They start feeding at 5am. This truly is 24/7. The sponsor letters make me feel included in the day to day care of the horses. I was so happy to hear MER won one of the five ASPCA grants from Help a Horse Day. What a wonderful honor for such well deserved folks.

My family has visited Mylestone on many occasions and we have enjoyed visiting with the rescue horses. We have attended both their annual Open House and had a private tour. The tour was very informative. The volunteers really know the history of the horses and their medical issues. Many of these horses were terribly abused and react differently than regular horses would at a riding facility. These are horses no one wanted that people starved, abandoned and abused or were in kill pens at auctions that could have gone for horse slaughter. If the horses don't find adoptive homes, they stay with Mylestone for the rest of their lives. We were surprised to find out that many of the horses have been with the rescue for 10+ years because people had not shown interest in adopting them. That really shows the compassion and determination Mylestone has in providing for the rescue horses.

Mylestone Equine Rescue exemplifies the standard that all rescues should work toward achieving. I am impressed by their professionalism, but also, by their compassion, because they take in horses that have been abused and/or neglected. They work diligently to accommodate special needs horses. The farm is exceptionally clean. All buildings and fences are maintained for the safety of their residents. Mylestone Equine Rescue has an Open House every year in October. On my first day of volunteering at Mylestone Equine Rescue (MER), I didn’t know what to expect. When I arrived, Bruce and Susankelly Thomspon, as well as the volunteers welcomed me in as if I was a part of the family. Susankelly understands that not only do these horses need us, but we need them as well, so despite having no experience with horses, she encouraged me to learn as much as I could. As I was being given a tour of the farm, I couldn’t help but think how lucky these horses were to finally find a home where they could live out the rest of their lives being loved and cared for. It was at that moment, that I spotted him. He wasn’t a big horse and didn’t seem overly eager to meet me. I was told he was severely abused and afraid. It was at that moment, looking into this poor creatures eyes that I fell in love. Needless to say, he allowed me into his heart and we formed a bond that was truly something special. Although he has since passed on, I hold that experience close to my heart and that is what pushes me to do more for these horses. In the 5 years I have been volunteering at MER, it has truly been a life-changing experience for me. Susankelly and Bruce Thompson have strived to save these horses and give them a chance at having a good life. Through volunteering at the farm and fundraising MER is able to help so many horses in need. I am proud to be a part of it. If you are looking to have an experience that will enrich your life in some way, volunteering at Mylestone is the place to go. There are so many ways in which you can be a part of Mylestone. You will never forget it and I’m sure you’ll come out of it having such a unique experience as I have.

This is a magical place. Many of the horses are just beginning their recovery from abuse and abandonment by previous owners. Some were rescued the last minute from destruction because people could not afford to take care of them. Others have become fit and others are already in new homes. Have gone to their annual open house several years, and you can see the horses look better as time goes by.
A well kept, clean place. Open house is a lot of fun. They can always use volunteers to help care for the horses

We are really sorry to hear you feel our horses were lonely considering we have 38 rescue horses here. We would appreciate knowing which horse you felt was not mentally right as well. Our horses are seen weekly by a vet, they are fed and cared for 4 times a day. Our days starts at 4am and ends around 9:30-10pm at night. Many of our horses have medical issues and we cater to their needs. We have been rescuing horses for over 20 years. The horses we have here are not typical riding horses, many were abused and mistreated. If you had concerns it would have been helpful to share them during the tours. We have nothing to hide and have worked very hard to provide long term care for the horses we have taken in. Most rescue organizations do not take in horses that are older and lame and provide care for them 10+ years. If you would like to speak with our vet over your concerns, please let us know.

If there was such a thing as an Angel for Horses, SusanKelly is it! This charity takes old, abandoned, abused, slaughterhouse bound horses and nurses them back to health. SusanKelly is very sensitive to the needs of the horses, sitting up at night with a sick one, or ready to feed meals round the clock to another.

The horses thrive under her care and the care of the many volunteers. Some of the horses are lucky enough to be adopted to good homes. Others (most of them) live out their lives with a dignity that they may never have experienced before. The transformation from frightened animal to loving pet is remarkable.

Each horse has a unique personality and they are all celebrated at Mylestone. SusanKelly's charity, Mylestone Equine Rescue has tremendous costs due to the medical and nuitritional needs of the horses (and at this time also one goat that is the companion of a pony). This charity is run by a warm caring horselover. Her monthly newsletters detail the horses and their progress. You can feel the love in them. I love this charity.

I have been a supporter of Mylestone for about 9-10 years and believe strongly in their mission, what they do and how they carry it out. Their life's dedication to the horses that have been mistreated, starved, to be sold at auction and slaughtered and help to other supporting equine organizations is not only noteworthy but deserved special recognition. The owners are compassionate, caring and generous individuals. I have visited many times and each time come away with a enriched and peaceful feeling that at least about 30 horses sharing this planet with us are getting their due and living the rest of their lives in a supportive and loving environment. As someone involved in the animal welfare field over 27 years, I have worked for the largest animal sheltering system in the state, including a rescue zoo, and have run my own purebred dog rescue. When I moved to western NJ in, I was looking to help an organization, and came across Mylestone. I am a horse lover, though not experienced in riding and handling, and soon began helping Susankelly in a number of ways. I've now been doing so for over 10 years. I cannot say enough good things about Mylestone. Sk saves the horses that need rescue the most; adoptability is not the primary criteria - giving a horse that has suffered a chance for a good life is. As a fellow rescue person, this is where my heart lies, and I was so happy to see the wonderful condition of the horses in Mylestone's care and how much they are loved by everyone who cares for them. To me, Mylestone is how a true rescue should function and I am honored to help them.

I first became aware of Mylestone Equine Rescue in 2008 when I attended an Open House and I have been a donor ever since. I am truly impressed with how well this organization is run and what it has accomplished. As a donor, it is important for me to know that my donation makes a difference and that funds are prudently managed. A small example of this is when I was visiting the rescue, and overheard one volunteer say to another while mucking stalls to collect the good hay so as not to waste it.

I have visited Mylestone several times over the past five years and believe that Mylestone's mission is well served by an actively engaged Board of Directors and dedicated volunteers some of whom travel over an hour on a regular basis to care for the horses awaiting a new home.

I am a long-time volunteer at Mylestone Equine Rescue. Volunteering a the farm, mucking & helping with the lunch shift, is so rewarding for me. The fresh air, the exercise, the beauty of these animals, I find to be very destressing and fulfilling with a sense of accomplishment.

As an Accountant, I was pretty green when I first started volunteering with the horses 6 years ago. But, a horse named "Sunny" was a great horse for my type. He knew exactly when, where, & what I was suppose to do. He has since passed on but was a big influence on my confidence with these great animals.

My favorite job duty on the farm is working by the "mini's", Patty & Lucy. When I first started volunteering, they were afraid of people & wouldn't let you touch them. Now, I look forward to hugging those cute faces!

Horses are majestic, beautiful to look at, and sometimes funny. There aren't many horse rescues. It is costly, hardwork, & personal sacrifices are made. I am so grateful for Mylestone being one of these special rescues.

As a big supporter of their work, I also try to help out with their many fundraisers when I can and I'm also a sponsor of one of their horses, Jiminy.

A few years ago, i became aware of the horrible plight of many horses. I learned that many perfectly great well-bred horses suffer unthinkable brutality. When for some reason a horse becomes retired, injured from working, inconvenient or unaffordable, they can easily end up in a situation where their only worth is their meat.

I was so glad to learn of rescues that protect and shelter horses and value them for the wonderful creatures that they are. Soon after, i became a volunteer at Mylestone Equine Rescue.

Mylestone is all about the horses. They will take horses that no one else wants and give each and every equine as good a life as possible. Many horses at Mylestone are old, lame, blind, on special diets and medication, but they all are loved and protected. They all get brand new coats and vet care, and farrier visits and dental needs met. The horses are brought back to health and become adoptable if possible.- and followed-up. Once at Mylestone, the horses will never be mistreated again.

Now I know first hand, the round the clock effort and sleepless nights (sometimes heartbreak) it takes the few people at Mylestone to run this rescue. Not like the corporate world (where i come from) everyone runs home after 7.5 hrs . . . This rescue is 24/7 . . . the management and organization it takes to run the rescue operation is astounding. Mylestone is truly a ministry of mercy and compassion and sacrifice for the needs of the horses.

When you visit Mylestone, I hope you see their calendar where every month a rescue horse gets celebrity status in photography and write-up displaying their unique beauty and story.

When there, i hope you will feel what i and other volunteers always enjoy . . . even when it is muddy, raining & freezing: you will experience the warmth of spirit expressed to you personally from a LOT of very grateful horses . . .

I first came to volunteer at Mylestone Equine Rescue in the capacity of a professional photographer more than 5 years ago. One of the board members approached me to see if I would be willing to donate my services to make a calendar of the rescue horses that would be sold as a fundraising item at the annual open house. Over the years the annual calendar project and my monthly photographs of the rescue horses have not only become a great asset but, my own personal mission of hope for the horses of MER.
While we have all heard the saying “a picture is worth a thousand words”, I truly believe this is the truth. Through my lens I have seen the despair of these magnificent creatures as they walk off the trailer upon their arrival at MER, starved, abused, neglected, lame and scared. Sometimes the despair is so palpable for me as well as for them, for I can see it in their eyes through the lens. But I believe that it is part of my mission to document their condition as they arrive so the world can be changed. Through the work of Bruce and SusanKelly Thompson and our devoted volunteers their lives are miraculously changed. This too, I get to document through my photographs, the hope, the devotion, and loving care they receive at MER.
For me I love coming to the rescue and taking my pictures. Everyone is always willing to lend me a hand, including the horses, in my quest for the perfect picture. As a horse owner myself I come with different experience then some of our other volunteers but love having the opportunity to teach them something, learn something from them, and have a great time doing it. Being a photographer for Mylestone and being associated with a truly great organization that has made such a difference in the lives of so many horses has been a great blessing for me.

Mylestone Equine Rescue is one magical place for me. I started volunteering at the farm 8 years ago – it’s my home away from home. When I pull into the driveway and see Calvin, Dillon, Sundance, Casey and Ghost, my heart just beats with excitement.

How it all began
My friend gave me a newspaper article regarding Mylestone Equine’s Open House. My husband (boyfriend at the time) and I went to the event and I was in heaven! Just walking around, breathing the air, having the sun shine on my face, and thinking, how grateful I was being among these beautiful horses here on such a beautiful farm. I saw a sign, “volunteering”. I wasn’t sure I could do it because there were reasons … I lived an hour away; I didn’t have any horse experience; I didn’t grow up on a farm. Heck, I never moved a horse. Rich (husband) gave me a little push and said, “You can do this. This is your dream to be volunteering!” And so I took my first small step towards the sign-up table, after that I never looked back.

Improving my life
Once I started volunteering, I learned so much, so quickly, and on top of that I fell hard for a Snowflake Appaloosa named, Holly. She is very special to me. When I call to Holly, she just gives me those sparkling eyes and comes running to me which makes my heart and spirit soar. And of course at the end of the day, I could never leave the farm without giving Holly, her favorite treat – carrots!!!

Susankelly and Bruce Thompson are absolute Angels. I have learned a lot from both of them, and also from the other volunteers. I know that these horses are forever grateful to them for striving to provide such a wonderful environment for all. Everyone at the farm is so very dear to me. It has been truly an honor to have met such wonderful, devoted individuals. When I leave the farm and I hear the words “thank you”, well, it means so much more to me than those words ordinarily mean. And I can’t help but think, I have contributed to all of this!

I am so grateful. It has truly been a life-changing experience.

I'm in my 4th year volunteering for Mylestone. As child, I became very passionate about horses and as a teenager had a horse of my own. Now as an adult I still love the envolvement and interaction with horses and I get to do it in a way that pays it forward for a very worthwhile organization. Mylestone specializes in taking some of the worst equine abuse and neglect cases and providing these horses with the love and care they deserve. I have witnessed some of the horses on the farm transform from a very compromised condition, upon their arrival, to thriving, happy animals. The work in caring for the 30+ horses on the farm is 24/7 and I can't think of an organization who does it better. The horses live out the rest of their lives in the peace and tranquility they deserve.

I started volunteering at Mylestone Equine Rescue a year ago. I was looking to learn more about horses, as they have always been a passion of mine, but I had no real experience with them. I learned so much this past year!! It is a wonderful "family" of caring and devoted people, who take their time to make you feel welcome, informed, useful, and most importantly, valued, as a volunteer and ultimately a friend. The horses are such an inspiration-they have been through so much, sometimes more than you could imagine, and yet they still offer their hearts to you in hopeful trust. What a gift to learn from them also!
Volunteering to do fundraiser events is another way to grow with this "family" of caregivers. It is always fun and rewarding to know you are making new friends who share your beliefs and concerns, while contributing to the success of this safe haven for these beautiful animals! They are so lucky to have found this safe and loving home, where they can spend their days playing, soaking up the sun, eating their fill and getting lots of loving attention, while either waiting to be adopted into a new loving home, or getting to live out the rest of their days at Mylestone.
It's been such a great year! They always thank me for my time and help, but I always say "thank you" back, because I feel like they are the ones giving to me. The owners of Mylestone and their family are so caring and concerned with their volunteers and help them in so many ways. I am blessed to be a part of this wonderful place and would love to see you there! Don't worry-they will make you feel as welcome as they did me! Volunteering is something I never really did much of in the past, but this has been one of the best things I've done in my life. :o)

I started volunteering at Mylestone (MER) after attending an Open House. I was taken by all the work that goes into taking care of horses. I didn't have any experience handling horses, but the other volunteers along with Bruce and Susankelly Thompson made it fun to learn. I love spending days mucking, feeding and pampering these horses that have had neglected and abusive pasts. Then I started attending events to get our message out to the public. Volunteering for events is a rewarding thing to do because you get to talk about the horses and raise money at the same time. After a time, I was asked to join the BoD and now as a Board member am helping to run MER by volunteering more time on the clerical side. We are always looking for new/more volunteers because many more people are having to give up their horses for financial reasons. You can also sponsor a horse and monthly you receive a letter telling you what has been going on that month along with a picture of your horse. I recommend volunteering at MER. Hope to see you there soon.
