Key West Nonprofits and Charities

I was refused emergency shelter and sent back home to an extremely violent home where I am being threatened with a gun solely based on the fact that I have a prescription for anti anxiety medication. I have an anxiety disorder and take my medication as directed. They discriminate against women who try to take care of themselves and send them back to their abuser to be killed. I may be murdered tonight but god forbid I take a Xanax or any benzodiazepine, right???

The work they do with children and their families is incredible!

The Community Foundation of the Florida Keys plays a vital role in the work of numerous organizations in the Florida Keys. CFFK has been especially responsive following recent emergencies such as the Covid pandemic and the devastating impacts of Cat-4 Hurricane Irma in 2017. CFFK has helped many groups get back on their feet quickly. The impact has been immeasurable.

Inflated salary's repetitive services with other established agencys. Task with running city homeless shelter but diverting funding to non essential case management at the expense of the shelter sub stard bed unsafe food hand unsanitary conditions at shelter. Need immediate audit and investigation. just a good ole boy and girl club soaking city funds and providing sub standard care to homeless population.<br>

I adopted our pets from the SPCA. All of them are wonderful additions to our family. The staff there is really friendly, helpful, and informative. <br> <br>On the flip side... When my son's hamsters had too many babies, the SPCA took them off of our hands and found good homes for them.

I have been involved with Be the Change of the Florida Keys since 2004. I was the Prevention Coordinator at KWHS for two years.The many programs such as Challenge Day, Lunch Buddies, BIGS, Beach Clean-Ups, Student Awareness Day, 8th Grade Transition and many others provide our students with a chance to share and help others. This is the only program that allows students to help their peers through the many bonding experiences that it promotes. Today I am the Lower Keys Prevention Coordinator for Be the Change of the Florida Keys and I am extremely excited about the many new programs that we are going to establish. They include an after school Career Program for Juniors and Seniors in High School, a reading program at the elementary schools as well as Peer Mediation Programs at all schools. We will be partnering with as many local non-profits as well as businesses who wish to help the children of Monroe County.

The need/cause is self evident. The organization is small but offers great lectures on Florida maritime history and relevant interests. The potential for greatness exists.

This Veterans organization reflects the contribution, comradeship and diligence during the Era of Segregation - 1919 to 1946. The dedication of the history of the United States of America and the efforts to make a change to sustain with honors. William Weech American Legion Post 168 and (Historic) VFW Walter R. Mickens Post 6021 on March 21, 2012 received recognition in the History of the United States of America; after nominated for listing in the National Register of Historic Places by the Florida Department of State, Division of Historical Resources. <br>Key West natives returning home from the Great Wars challenged another hurdle in Life to continue their services to the many comrades, their families, community, state and nation, even abroad. This joint venture of two Veteran organizations signifies a community within a community at such times when this Country still endured separation of races. The uniqueness of this establishment on this Island off the Florida Straits implemented a relationship and respect for achievements. <br>The members joined with many political leaders and community in whole to build this structure with their skills, talents and compassion for what is right. On March 3, 1946, VFW Walter R. Mickens Post 6021 received their Charter under the Veteran of Foreign Wars and June 27, 1946 William Weech Post 168 chartered under the American Legion Department of Florida. These veterans were members of both organizations, who collectively decided to join forces and construction their own Post Home under one roof. The land purchased from Key West Post Master Fred Dion and wife Margaret Dion for $10.00 and other valuables in consideration of both Posts. They dedicated the building on August 25, 1951; with the help of members from both Posts and Ladies Auxiliary fundraising efforts, donations/contributions from community businesses, and assistance from Arthur Sawyer Post 28 until the completion on December 10, 1952. <br>Today, William Weech American Legion Post 168 remains the sole organization of this Joint Venture continuing their purpose as a Veteran’s Organization. Our Mission Statement: <br>American Legion Preamble <br>For God and Country, we associate ourselves together for the following purposes <br>To Uphold and Defend the Constitution of the United States of America; To Maintain Law and Order; to Foster and Perpetuate a one hundred percent Americanism; To Preserve the memories and incidents of our association in the Great Wars; to Inculcate an individual sense of obligation to the community, state and nation; to combat the Autocracy of both the Classes and the Masses; To make right the master of might; to promote peace and goodwill on earth; to Safeguard and transmit to posterity the principals of Justice, freedom and Democracy; To consecrate and sanctify our Comradeship by our devotion to mutual Helpfulness. <br> <br>The restoration of this building will begin in early or later July 2012. Your contribution/donations and support will assist this project with appreciation. Reef Relief helps promote our very fragile coral reef, as well as the mangrove islands and ecosystem that supports it. Many visitors and locals know little about the vulnerability of the marine life. Reef relief is a prominent member of the community, hosting cleanups and educating the masses. My involvement with reef relief includes helping them organize their youth program with the school district - mostly organization and contacting the teachers. Help them out!

Several members of my congregation and I just toured the FKOC facilities this past Sunday. We are all most impressed by the professionalism we saw, as well as the results which were reported of people no longer homeless. I will participate in the success of this organization, and I know several others from Unity of the Keys will also. Rev. Phillip Smedstad
