OPERATION SAFE INC NFP

I first became acquainted with the Executive Director of Operation S.A.F.E. (Saving Animals from Euthanasia) four or five years ago when my sister, a neighbor and myself chipped in to have several roaming cats "fixed". Subsequently, a few winters ago, a little feral cat began coming to our front porch to eat the food I left out for any little beggars. She was extremely wild - would hiss at me if I even looked at her, but she didn't mind taking the food. Unfortunately, we didn't get her trapped soon enough as when Spring came this very small cat hauled her family to our front yard - closer to the food source. Operation SAFE loaned us a couple of extra traps and we got them all spayed. Found homes for two of them, and the little mother and one baby now reside in our house. This was a great transaction in every way. I am now a member of the board, and while we aren't at the warm and fuzzy end of the spectrum in the world of caring for homeless pets (and, let me say that I definitely admire all of those people) - we are at the origin of the problem - that being, of course, the huge pet overpopulation. No matter how hard and diligently the shelters work to find homes for these unwanted animals, there just aren't enough people or homes for all of them, and so many are euthanized yearly. I think the number is somewhere between 4 and 5 million a year - and, not only is that an unacceptable number, it is a horrible reflection on we humans. Our goal is to stop these births before they occur, and, hopefully, one day there will be no unwanted companion animals.
