RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES OF AUSTIN AND CENTRAL TEXAS INC
April 21, 2011
Four years ago, after spending a week with a friend whose son was at MD Anderson Hospital in Houston, and after realizing how important the Ronald McDonald House there was to her and her family during their child's illness, I began volunteering at the House in Austin. In the past four years, we have completed and moved into a beautiful, energy-efficient new house adjacent to Dell Children's Hospital. In that time we have served almost 4000 families, and volunteers have spent over 23,000 hours per year supporting the wonderful work that the House staff does for the families of hospitalized children. Volunteers purchase food, cook meals, wash dishes, decorate and clean rooms, do office work, donate money and items on the needs list, garden, collect pull tabs, and support fund-raising events such as the Bandana Ball and Lights of Love 5K. Seeing a family come in from the hospital and being able to relax over a warm lunch or supper is the most gratifying feeling in the world.
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
seeing how much it means to a stressed-out family to have a place to stay, warm meals, and emotional support when they have a child in the hospital.
Ways to make it better...
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
not make any changes at all. It is a wonderful organization that provides a home away from home for families of ill children.
Volunteer & I do whatever needs to be done ranging from office work to raising money for the 5K.
