Review for Lawrence Community Shelter, Lawrence, KS, USA

Rating: 5 stars

LCS is an excellent example of a nonprofit that uses its financial, volunteer and space resources to the utmost. Homeless concerns are never a popular local topic and many local citizens would like the homeless to leave the city. In spite of many hurdles, the director, Loring Henderson, and the board members have persevered in finding private funding and support to keep the difficulties of housing our local homeless population in front of the city commission and Lawrence citizens. The board has spent countless hours working to obtain a space large enough to house those who need shelter from the summer's heat and winter's cold; to provide health and social services; to provide a breakfast and supper each day; to provide job training; to provide a safe place to keep clean and sleep.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the individuals who have suceeded in overcoming homelessness and in individuals who have died with dignity in the friendship of LCS.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

admit that I couldn't do the job.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the wonderful individuals...board members, staff of LCS, homeless individuals, donors...who work to make this nonprofit sucessful.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

enthusiastic, energtic and very caring.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

create a state of the art facility to help individuals who need a hand up to deal with a myriad of personal problems.

Ways to make it better...

our community would understand that LCS is trying to help the poorest among us.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

the prejudices and misinformation about homelessness that are in the community even though many meetings, newstories, opportunities abound to counter the prejudices and misinformation.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Loring Henderson, Don Huggins and the board work their tails off for LCS. The donors, staff and volunteers also work very hard with very little thanks from outside the organization.

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2009

Role:  General Member of the Public & Former board member, donor and concerned citizen.
