Review for New Mexico Wilderness Alliance, Albuquerque, NM, USA
I joined the NM Wilderness Alliance because it is the most active conservation group in New Mexico, with about 5000 members state-wide, and has the most focused effort at protecting wild lands. It is the only local organization that consistently works to promote legislative implementation of the Wilderness Act to add Wilderness to our federal lands inventory. They also sponsor great service projects that introduce members and the public to important places like Otero Mesa and the forested lands of the Gila and northern New Mexico. I find the Wilderness Alliance to be the best voice in support of the conservation values I find important.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
Two pieces of legislation were introduced into Congress last year that would have protected over 700,000 acres of land. Congress ran out of time before they came up for a vote. Our Senator Bingaman has reintroduced one, and and is expected to introduce another. Otero Mesa, because of NM Wild efforts is high on the list of candidates to become a National Monument of over one million acres.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
Find a way to increase its membership, its donor base, and its visibility. It needs more in-state help from residents and it needs to become more visible locally and nationally. The staff and board are working on solutions, so keep watching. Charity Navigator is great. I use it all the time to follow charities I donate to and to see how NM Wild compares.
