Review for Living Beyond Breast Cancer, Bala Cynwyd, PA, USA
I was diagnosed in the fall of '01, turned to LBBC first, and felt like I had found my guardian angels. Eight years later LBBC is still my main resource for education, information and support. The LBBC staff is incredibly caring, compassionate, and helpful. Their approach to women is so personal...you feel as if you're their only client, and as if your issues and concerns are the most important ones. How they do this is a mystery to me, given the size of this organization! All of LBBC's events and materials are framed hopefully and positively (e.g., annual conferences, Helpline, teleconferences, and publications). They are incredibly attuned to a philosophy of hope. (At one of the early conferences I attended, one of the speakers posted a chart with outcomes in percentages attached to specific diagnoses...not my idea of positive and hopeful. When I gave my feedback about this to the staff, they had already noted this and were already planning to give feedback to the speaker.) Whenever I felt most hopeless I just reached out to LBBC and left feeling like I could conquer this disease, or at least be around for a lot longer than I was fearing. Their Helpline volunteers and staff helped me sort through decisions about surgeries and treatments, and did this with incredible empathy, honesty and compassion. I obviously can't say enough about LBBC. I was lucky to know about them at the time of my diagnosis, and it's been my great fortune to have them in my life ever since.
More Feedback
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
my ability to navigate the health care system and advocate for what I needed with the education, information and support I received from LBBC.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
keep on keeping on! Continue to nurture staff and volunteers; continue to grow, so we could reach even more women with more resources; ensure that the philosophy, values and mission were alive in the day to day work, just as they are today.
What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
the hope that they helped inspire in me when I was feeling least hopeful.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
incredibly compassionate, hard-working, energetic, dedicated and hopeful.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
be that much larger and reach that many more women in need of their services!
Ways to make it better...
I hadn't had breast cancer! ;-) Given that I did, I can't think of anything that could have improved my interactions with LBBC and the richness and significance of my experience with them.
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
probably resources and managing growth, given the general economic climate and the growing needs of women with breast cancer.
One thing I'd also say is that...
I wish every woman diagnosed with breast cancer knew about LBBC early in her diagnosis! What a difference that would make...
