Review for SHARE Self-Help for Women with Breast or Ovarian Cancers, Inc., New York, NY, USA
I was introduced to SHARE soon after I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001. I knew little about the disease & was very frightened at the prospect of surgery and chemotherapy. From the moment I spoke with the hotline director, I began to feel hopeful, as if I did not have to go through cancer alone and could have some control over the direction my life had taken. I joined a support group, attended informational workshops that gave me knowledge and support that empowered me to make treatment decisions and life decisions. My support group continues to meet several times a year & we will celebrate our ninth anniversary of being cancer-free next fall. I continue my connection SHARE as a volunteer on the hotline and in fundraising activities. SHARE operates on a shoe-string budget with a dedicated staff and volunteers. I have worked for non-profit organizations for 40 years and can honestly say that SHARE accomplishes more with less than any other organization I have ever seen.
