Review for The Nature Generation, Hillsboro, VA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I have worked closely with this group for many years. They live p to their reputation. Authenticity in their work, they are tireless in engaging schools, children and communities in work to protect our planet and for environmental awareness. Sustainability and stewardship are valued in their approach to education. There are opportunities to take part in grants and meaningful projects as well. Their ground-breaking Green Earth Book Award has been nationally renowned for 16 years-a one of a kind award given in 5 categories for children's and young adult books that promote engagement for children and young adults to become active in their fight to save our planet.

I have greatly enjoyed working with the Newton Marasco Foundation. Their ideas to protect the environment are innovative and purposeful. They walk their talk by providing a variety of opportunities for our younger citizens to gain more knowledge and/or get involved through projects that focus on the environment. I am specifically involved in the children's literature project, "The Green Earth Book Award" as a reviewer on two selection committees. The award categories have advanced from 1 in 2005 to 4 awards in 2011. This is a great way to get children, their teachers and families aware of the issues involving our planet.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the success of the Green Earth Book Award. Hopefully the award will generate new books and authors/illustrators who promote environmental stewardship for children. The books give our future generation ideas and power to improve/protect our environment.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

find a way to get more national recognition for the Green Earth Book Awards. During Earth Week, this award should be featured on all of the national networks (The Today Show, Good Morning America, Ellen, Morning Joe, etc.) as the first and only children's book award that not only rewards children's literature about the environment but also emphasizes stewardship, empowering children in ways they can help the earth.

For the time you spent, how much of an impact did you feel your work or activity had?

Life-changing

Did the organization use your time wisely?

Very Well

Would you recommend this group to a friend?

Definitely

Did your volunteer experience have an effect on you? (teaching you a new skill, or introducing new friends, etc.)

Yes. It has enhanced my passion for finding ways to do my part in protecting my planet.

How did this volunteer experience make you feel?

Each of us needs to do a little bit to help the environment. Working with NMF has made me more knowledgeable and wiser in ways to do my part. It also has empowered me to share what I learn with my college students at Salisbury University and also with the schools with whom I work.

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2011

Role:  Volunteer & I helped select 3 of the 4 award winning children's literature books for the Green Earth Book Award.
