Review for The Global Mountain Fund Inc, Sandia Park, NM, USA

Rating: 1 stars

Let me start off by saying that my dealings with Scott, the Mountain Fund's founder and executive director have been so unsavory that I have not used my real name in order to avoid further dealings with him. I can't tell you how disappointed I was with my Mountain Fund experience. It was awful. The hospital placement is an absolute scam and the man who runs the organization is so awful to his volunteers. While I was there, he kicked out a fellow volunteer for merely expressing her disappointment with the hospital placement. It is as if he thinks he and his organizations are the greatest things since sliced bread and if you so much as point out a few shortcomings and, will give you a piece of his mind. Most of the other reviewers on here participated in programs other than the medical programs and I think that might be why the reviews are so exemplary; the programs working with children seem to be great, but ALL of the medical programs are vastly oversold on the MF website. While I was in Nepal, there were about 15 other medical volunteers and not only were none of them happy with their experiences, but all of them felt just as scammed as I did. Doctors, nurses, medical and premedical students alike were very disappointed and even outraged by the fraudulence of MF. As far as I'm concerned there are no medical placements. The MF just drops you into a hospital where few doctors work and where hardly any of those doctors are willing to allow volunteers to observe their work. Scam, scam, scam.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Be more transparent about the reality of the medical "placements". They should either be honest about the the lack of interest on the part of the hospital in having volunteers, or the placements simply shouldn't exist.

We've never had a volunteer by this name.

Travel to a developing country isn't for everyone. Sometimes volunteers have expectations that simply cannot be met. It's a shame this person had a bad time, most have a great time.
