My Nonprofit Reviews
Review for The Humane Society of the United States, Washington, DC, USA
I've donated to the HSUS every month for years. It's pitiful, really, because I am now learning how much my donations have been truly used to benefit animals directly. They won't answer me when I ask them not to spam me with their requests for money. They won't answer me when I try to volunteer at their local program. I tried calling their Gaithersburg, Md office twice and left a voicemail, but no one answered or called back. I am saddened to hear people say how great the organization is because I really wish that were true. I want to help animals not executives' pockets, so I will be sending my money directly to my local shelter from now on, and no "gift" in the mail is going to change my mind.

Hi Hmmm, I work at HSUS, and am sorry to hear about your experience, if you post to our Facebook page, or message us there, we will gladly look into this for you. Our National Volunteer Center offers lots of great volunteer opportunities as well. As for donations, 80% go to programs to help animals, and we are rated a 4-star charity (the highest possible) by Charity Navigator, approved by the Better Business Bureau for all 20 standards for charity accountability, voted by Guidestar’s Philanthropedia experts as the #1 high-impact animal protection group, and named by Worth Magazine as one of the 10 most fiscally responsible charities. I hope you'll get in touch on Facebook or twitter, or you can email me at email@example.com, and I can look into the issues you were having.
